Position: Special Education Teacher
Organization: Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society (LMDSS)
Location: 108 17828 65A Ave., Surrey, BC (In-Person and Online)
Status: Subcontract Position
Compensation: TBD per hour, depending on experience level
Overview
LMDSS is seeking an experienced Special Education Teacher to provide one-on-one and small-group instruction to learners with Down syndrome and, at times, other neurodevelopmental diagnoses (e.g., autism). Younger learners are looking for additional support to be successful in school, while older learners are focused on maintaining and strengthening skills in a comfortable, empathetic environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction for neurodiverse students (K–12 and adults) either in person or virtually.
- Teach an adaptive curriculum in math, reading, money math,budgeting functional numeracy, literacy, comprehension, social and life skills.
- Willing to modify your plans accordingly to meet the needs of the student where they are on that day.
- Design, modify, implement, and monitor individualized education plans (IEPs).
- Apply strategies to support learning, independence and participation.
- Use assistive technology, including TouchChat and Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
- Maintain professional documentation, session notes, and attendance records.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor or Master's of Education Degree
- Valid BC Teaching Certificate - COQ
- Criminal Record Check
- Post-Graduate Program in Special Education
- Minimum 2 years' experience in the Special Education Teaching role
- Training focused on Individual Education Plans, behavioral intervention and assistive technology
- Orton-Gillingham Training an asset
- American Sign Language an asset
- First Aid, CPR, and Food Secure Certification an asset
- Microsoft 365 and Teams knowledge required
Schedule & Term Hours are flexible and will be scheduled based on student needs and teacher availability. This is an ongoing subcontract role; the start date is ASAP. Please include your weekly availability (days/times) in your application.
Compensation & Subcontracting
Compensation is TBD per hour and will be based on experience and training. As this is a subcontract position, the successful candidate will invoice LMDSS for approved hours in accordance with LMDSS processes.
Work Location
Sessions may be delivered in person at 108 17828 65A Ave., Surrey, BC and for online classes(Microsoft Teams). Any travel expectations (e.g., home-based sessions) are TBD and will be discussed during the interview process.
