Halifax Public Libraries invites INTERNAL and EXTERNAL applications for the permanent, seasonal position of English Language Learning (ELL) Specialist at Captain William Spry

Public Library .

This position is seasonal up to March 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension and will resume annually from August 30, 2026/September to March 31, 2027.

Note: This position is dependent on grant funding approval.

There is a two-week unpaid break from December to January.

This is a unionized position, preference will be given to internal applicants from the NSUPE local 14 bargaining unit.

If you require an accommodation, we will confidentially address your needs. ABOUT THE BRANCH Captain William Spry Public Library serves a vibrant and diverse community in Spryfield and surrounding areas.

Located in busy community recreation center, the library is a community hub and a regular stopping place for many residents, including children and teens who attend the library independently.

The branch works closely with many service partners to collectively support our community KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Under the direction of the Community Learning Lead, the English Language Learning (ELL) Specialist will: Plan, deliver and evaluate the ELL program , related social activities and celebrations at one or more library or community locations Informally assess learners, set goals and track progress Assist with the supervision of volunteers Match tutors and learners,



maintain valuable communication and resolve issues Provide support to tutors and learners in choosing library materials and other resources Work to actively engage volunteers and learners in the library in formal and informal ways Train and support staff in working with language learners and volunteers Act as a resource in the area of English Language Learning Build relationships and maintain community partnerships Make referrals to other services in the community When additional, non-program hours are provided: Plan, deliver and evaluate programs and services for newcomers

Facilitate diverse social, recreational and learning experiences for newcomers

Act as Person in Charge in library branch(es)Provide customer service DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? Education and Experience: Bachelors Degree & two (2) years of related experience OR Two (2) years of Post-Secondary & four (4) years of related experience Requirements: Read and write English Excellent communication, conflict resolution an customer service skills Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and training Experience in program planning, delivery and evaluation Awareness of issues related to English Language Learning and Newcomers Experience working with diverse communities Basic computer knowledge and skills including: Functions of a web browser

Microsoft office applications

Social media applications Intermediate technology skills

Willingness to learn and experiment with additional tools and technologies

Willingness to support others in learning technical skills and concepts Assets: Knowledge of related groups, organizations and services Previous experience in volunteer management Fluency in a second language Facilitation Skills (Please state whether the above application requirements are met in your resume and/or cover letter.) TRAVEL This position requires occasional travel between our various library branches and community sites within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
