Mount Allison University invites applications from qualified candidates for the position of University Archivist. This is a six-month full-time appointment to commence January 1, 2027.
Duties
Reporting to the Dean of Libraries & Archives, the University Archivist is responsible for the management of the University Archives and university records, and as part of the team of librarians, participates in the broader mandates of the Libraries and Archives. The University Archivist works to develop, preserve and promote the use of the archival collections in support of the teaching and research missions of the University.
The University Archivist enables access to, discovery of, and dissemination and promotion of archival materials. The incumbent undertakes the arrangement and description of archival records in all formats acquired by the Mount Allison University Archives, the preparation and maintenance of finding aids, and the development of databases and digital repositories for the management of operational records. The Archivist explores and leads digital initiatives dealing with archival collections.
Duties include
- the provision of public services,
- curriculum support and teaching,
- interaction with donors,
- and other duties related to the ongoing operations of the Mount Allison University Libraries and Archives.
The incumbent will also be expected to fulfill duties in the libraries, in line with the library’s needs and the archivist’s particular expertise.
Qualifications and requirements
Qualifications for this position include a master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program: a master’s degree with a concentration in archival studies is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities and relevant years of experience in archival work, preferably in an academic environment, and working experience in a library. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education, knowledge, skills, and experience may be considered.
The successful candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills; a strong public service centered philosophy, the ability to work well in a collegial setting, and a keen interest in developing specialized archival collections.
This position is represented by the Mount Allison Faculty Association (MAFA) and participation and involvement in scholarship, duties in the library, and service are expected. The appointment will be made at the rank of General or Assistant Librarian.
Salary will be within the established range and commensurate with qualifications and experience. In 2026-2027, the annual salary floor for General Librarian is $71,359. Review of applications will begin October 5, 2026 and continue until the position is filled.
