Job Overview
We are looking for a motivated and experienced VEX IQ Robotics Teacher & Competition Coach to teach robotics classes and coach students participating in VEX IQ Robotics Competitions.
The ideal candidate should enjoy working with children, have strong hands-on robotics skills, and be able to teach students how to design, build, program, test, and improve VEX IQ robots. This position includes both curriculum-based robotics instruction and competition team coaching.
Responsibilities
- Teach VEX IQ robotics classes to elementary and middle school students.
- Deliver structured robotics curriculum covering building, programming, engineering design, and problem-solving.
- Teach students how to design and build VEX IQ robots using motors, gears, sensors, drivetrains, and mechanical mechanisms.
- Teach programming using VEXcode IQ Blocks and/or Python.
- Guide students through the engineering design process, including brainstorming, prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and improvement.
- Coach VEX IQ competition teams throughout the competition season.
- Help students understand the current VEX IQ game, scoring system, rules, and robot requirements.
- Develop robot strategies for teamwork matches, Robot Skills, autonomous programming, and driver-controlled challenges.
- Conduct driver practice, programming practice, mock matches, and competition preparation.
- Help students improve robot reliability, performance, and consistency.
- Teach students how to maintain an Engineering Notebook and document their design process.
- Prepare students for judge interviews and VEX judged awards.
- Attend selected VEX IQ competitions, workshops, scrimmages, and team events when required.
- Provide technical troubleshooting and guidance during practices and competitions.
- Encourage teamwork, communication, creativity, leadership, and independent problem-solving.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment.
- Communicate student progress and competition preparation needs with program management.
Qualifications
- Experience with VEX IQ robotics is strongly preferred.
- Experience teaching, mentoring, or coaching children in robotics, engineering, coding, or STEM programs.
- Strong understanding of basic mechanical design, gears, motors, sensors, and robotics systems.
- Experience with VEXcode IQ or similar programming platforms.
- Ability to troubleshoot both mechanical and programming problems.
- Strong communication and classroom-management skills.
- Patient, responsible, organized, and comfortable working with elementary and middle school students.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a teaching/coaching team.
- Availability for evenings and/or weekends depending on class and competition schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous VEX IQ competition experience as a competitor, coach, mentor, judge, or volunteer.
- Experience coaching teams for regional, provincial, national, or world-level VEX competitions.
- Experience with autonomous programming and Robot Skills preparation.
- Experience with Engineering Notebook development and judge interview preparation.
- Background in engineering, computer science, robotics, education, or a related STEM field.
What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who can do more than simply help students build a robot. The successful candidate should be able to teach students how to think like engineers, understand why a design works, identify problems, test solutions, and continuously improve their robot.
The teacher should guide and mentor students while ensuring that students remain actively involved in designing, building, programming, documenting, and operating their own robots.
Job Type: Part-time / Contract
Schedule: Weekday evenings and weekends as required
