About Us

Responsibilities
The Technical Specialist (GIS Specialist) will provide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) expertise to the Campus, and to provide input and oversight to future planning for the GIS program at Western Libraries. The Technical Specialist will contribute to research excellence in the Western community, and works closely with faculty, researchers, and students, who require geographical information, specialized data, and implementation of geographic information science. The Technical Specialist (GIS Specialist) provides teaching and instruction related to GIS, specialized data, and data visualization to the Western University community including students, staff and faculty.

The Technical Specialist (GIS Specialist) collaborates on and provides support to grant-funded research including such projects as the Northern Tornadoes Project and the Surviving Memory in Post-war El Salvador Project (SSHRC funded for 8 years), as well as other campus initiatives. The Technical Specialist (GIS Specialist) provides integral support to the future programming direction for GISc,



digital mapping and data visualization in the emerging Digital Scholarship Centre (DSC).

Qualifications
Education:

3-year University Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Geography or a related field
Course work or training in GIS, cartography, or geomatics preferred

Experience:

2 years’ experience using GIS Software, specifically QGIS and ArcGIS, in a variety of settings
Previous experience providing client service
Previous experience troubleshooting errors, locating alternative data sources, and finding workarounds to potential roadblocks within ArcGIS
Previous experience within a GIS position in a relevant research or academic environment preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledgeable of GIS methods and analysis and ability to provide solutions and identify applications of GIS within research or client projects
In-depth knowledge of digital cartography data and demonstrated proficiency with the Esri suite of software
Experience with current Esri software: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online (Survey123, Dashboards, Story Maps), Server for ArcGIS or ArcGIS Enterprise)
Experience working as an ArcGIS Online Organization Administrator
Experience analyzing and processing raster mosaic datasets within the ArcGIS Server workplace
Ability to collect and discern relevant data to create and interpret reports
Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the NTP/NHP teams and the University community
Decision making and problem‑solving skills to resolve complex technical issues
Detail‑oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy




Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments within the GIS field
Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
Ability to collaborate across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes and support work beyond one's own unit
Communication skills to listen to the complete message, solicit more information as required, and provide feedback
Verbal and written communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users with demonstrated training skills both one‑on‑one and in a group setting
Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
Ability to provide solutions and ideas for improvement by using imaginative approaches where constructive thinking and innovation are required
Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
