Public Health Inspector

The Health Department has future opportunities for individuals to fill the positions of temporary Public Health Inspector. The incumbent will:

- Conduct compliance inspections and re-inspections to monitor adherence to regulatory standards
- Perform inspections, gather samples, and perform tests to promote and ensure safe public health practices in various settings
- Review and assess conditions of facilities and determine appropriate corrective action when required
- Carry out complaint investigations/inspections related to food safety, safe water, rabies control, infection control, health hazards, and the control of infectious diseases
- Enforce Provincial and Municipal legislation, acting as Provincial Offences Officer as required
- Examine and approve plans for new construction, or the alteration of existing premises, assisting with the design criteria as required
- Assist in the development, review and revision of program policies/procedures/practices, analyzing feedback and recommending modifications as required
- Respond to public inquiries and provide information, document and investigate complaints, determine appropriate corrective action
- Promote public health and education through the development and delivery of seminars, workshops and communication materials




- Provide guidance and instruction to student PHIs through the sharing of knowledge, experience and mentoring
- Foster and maintain strong relationships with the public, community partners and other agencies

The successful applicant will possess:

- A Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or Environmental Public Health or related discipline, in addition a Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada)
- Current membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) if certified after 2017 (Proof of current CIPHI membership in good standing is required for all Certified Public Health Inspectors certified in or after 2017)
- Previous experience within a public health agency
- Sound knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations and standards related to public health
- Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service excellence, professionalism, effective interpersonal communication, embracing innovation and learning, diversity and inclusion
- Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and flexibility/adaptability in your role and dealing with the public/clients
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills, adept at diffusing emotionally charged situations and will possess culturally aware and empathetic communication skills
- Ability to work independently, co-operatively and collaboratively as part of a team
- Demonstrated time management skills and the ability to prioritize
- Ability to work variable hours as required
- Ability to effectively use technology and document in regional applications




- A valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle

CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 8

This position is with Salary Grade 8 and will be paid at the following hourly rates:

- Start: $52.07 - One Year: $54.96 - Two Year: $57.85

Conditions of Employment
