This role ensures accurate payroll operations, tax reporting, auditing, and system functionality, while partnering cross-functionally with HR, finance, and organizational leadership. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of California and multi-state payroll laws, is experienced in system implementations, and thrives in high-volume,
process improvement-focused settings.Key ResponsibilitiesPayroll Operations & ComplianceLead accurate and compliant payroll processes within a grant-funded, regulated environmentEnsure adherence to all federal, state, and local payroll and tax regulationsApprove payroll submissions and deliverables; act as backup forprocessing when neededCarry out additional payroll-related responsibilities as requiredAudit & Risk ManagementManage audits tied to payroll, retirement plans, government compliance, workers’ compensation, and wage and hour lawsConduct internal audits to validate payroll accuracy, tax filings, accruals, and rate structuresProcess Improvement & DocumentationDevelop and maintain standard operating procedures for payroll functionsDrive ongoing system and process enhancements to optimize accuracy and efficiencyTeam Leadership & Cross-Functional CollaborationSupervise, mentor, and support payroll team members to achieve strong performanceFoster collaborative partnerships across departments to ensure alignment and accountabilityQualificationsBachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field REQUIRED; Certified PayrollProfessional preferredMinimum 5 years of experience in a high-volume, audit-intensive payroll settingExpertise in California and multi-state payroll regulationsProficient in Microsoft Office and enterprise-level payroll/timekeeping systems (UKG preferred)Proven experience with payroll system implementationsStrong communication skills for training and cross-functional guidanceInterested in hearing more?
