Full-Time Health Care Aide / Caregiver – Individual with ALS (Ventilator-Dependent, High Medical Needs)
Location: Southwest Edmonton (Windermere area), AB – private residence
Position: Permanent, full time – 36 hours/week
Schedule: Tuesday to Sunday 7:00pm-11:00pm, plus Saturday and Sunday 8:00am-2:00pm (split shifts on weekends; Mondays off)
Wage: $22.00/hour

Job Description:
- Provide personal care and health support to an adult male living with ALS who is fully ventilator-dependent (non-invasive, mask-based ventilation). Duties include but are not limited to:
- Managing non-invasive ventilation, including mask fitting and repositioning, continuous monitoring, responding promptly to ventilator alarms or mask displacement, and equipment care
- Oral suctioning for secretion management (client is unable to swallow)
- Gastrostomy (G-tube) feeding and related care
- Transfers and repositioning using a mechanical (ceiling) lift
- Personal care: bathing, hygiene, toileting, dressing
- Medication administration as directed
- Light housekeeping related to the client’s care
- Monitoring the client’s condition and reporting changes to family and health professionals
- Accompanying the client to appointments as needed
Qualifications (required):
- Health Care Aide certificate and registration in good standing with the CLPNA (College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience providing care to a ventilator-dependent client or a client with comparably complex medical needs, specifically including non-invasive ventilation support, oral suctioning for secretion management, G-tube feeding, and mechanical lift transfers
- Current CPR and First Aid certification
- Recent criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
- Able to work the full schedule above, including evenings, weekends, and weekend split shifts
Please note: as the client is fully dependent on ventilation, this role requires sustained attentiveness. The caregiver must remain alert and responsive throughout each shift. The client is non-verbal and communicates through assistive means. Experience with ALS or similar progressive neurological conditions is an asset. Patience and attentiveness to non-verbal communication are essential.
