This position works within the context of LABC policies and is responsible for providing legal advice and limited representation in the full range of family/child protection law practice, with some administrative legal support. This position works with a group of lawyers who provide direct client advice services, and will liaise with other local justice stakeholders. This position also provides operational support to Family Law Services in developing legal services, programs and law reform.DutiesProvides family/child protection law services including summary legal advice and information to clients, limited representation, and duty counsel services in courts as assigned.Conducts legal research and prepares required documents.Develops solutions to family legal problems and provides services for clients in all types of family law matters.Discusses, negotiates and resolves case matters by working with opposing lawyers, judges, and social workers as appropriate.Provides day to day supervision and work direction including performance planning, coaching and feedback sessions to support staff.Supports the work of Family Law Services.Develops and delivers public legal education in family/child protection law as required and time permits.Collaborates with community advocates through the exchange of information and assistance with LABC work and law reform work.Builds relationships and partnerships with community groups including Indigenous communities by attending community cultural events and conferences etc. to network, raise awareness of LABC and services, present information and identify community needs.May assist in the development and delivery of workshops for community members (intermediaries and the public) on a variety of issues related to their needs including child protection, family law, civil law and mediation as required.Provide advice on service issues, policy development, pilot projects, and local practices in the Region.Provides time logs,
completes tariff billings and monthly caseload reports as requested and in accordance with standard requirements.Develop partnerships and effective working relationships with the private bar and other justice system participants in the Region.Performs other related duties as required.QualificationsA degree from a Law School of recognized standing and membership or eligibility for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.A preference for four (4) to eight (8) years of call to the bar in British Columbia, with significant practice experience in family and child protection law.Experience supervising support staff.Experience at Provincial and Supreme Court levels involving the full range of family and child protection law issues.Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Travel & Local RequirementsA valid BC driver’s license is required.Must be willing and able to travel occasionally throughout Metro Vancouver.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrated excellent knowledge of family and child protection law and practice.An understanding of Indigenous issues, cultures as well as Indigenous community groups and agencies and historical and current issues affecting Indigenous communities.Knowledge of and experience with alternative dispute resolution and collaborative processes.Knowledge of administrative principles, practices, techniques, policies and legislative development relevant to indigenous programs, services and activities.An awareness of government laws and policies impacting Indigenous peoples.Ability to communicate and relate to Indigenous people and their communities, with sensitivity to cultural and Tribal/Nation differences.Knowledge of local community resources.Familiar with the structure and history of Indigenous communities within BC.Knowledge of cooperative processes and the Ministry of Children and Family Development’s Collaborative Practice and Decision‑Making Policy.Ability to understand and comply with LABC Policy and Procedures.Experience and interest in Public Legal Education (PLE).Ability to develop resourceful solutions to legal problems of clients and competing claims.Ability to assert the rights of clients in all family law matters at Provincial and Supreme Court levels.Demonstrate solid legal analyses of client issues.Proven experience and ability in providing unbundled services or willingness to do so,
