Overview
As a member of the military, Aerospace Engineering Officers are responsible for all aspects of engineering, maintenance and management of military aircraft and their support equipment and facilities during military operations.

Responsibilities

Manage and supervise the personnel and resources required for the servicing, inspection and repair of aircraft.

Oversee designing, developing and testing current systems and modifying existing ones, or conduct life‑cycle management of aircraft and air‑weapon systems.

Participate in the formulation of plans, policies, standards and specifications for present and future military aircraft and their support equipment and facilities.

Provide technical advice on aircraft operation.

Work Environment
Work varies depending on employment type. Initially, Aerospace Engineering Officers are employed at a flying unit as an Aircraft Servicing Officer, an Aircraft Repair Officer, an Avionics Support Officer or an Engineering Support Officer.

For those pursuing a career in the Regular Force, after training you will be assigned to your first base and may be relocated at some point in your career. Primary Reserve Force employees work part‑time or in a Reserve unit and are not obligated to relocate; typically they serve one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full‑time employment.

Applicants with a Bachelor of Engineering or a relevant university degree may be evaluated by the CAF to determine if the program matches.



Basic training and military officer qualification training are required before assignment.

Regular Officer Training Plan: CAF pays successful recruits to complete a bachelor degree program in the Royal Military College System. Candidates receive full‑time salary, medical and dental care, and vacation time with full pay in exchange for working in the CAF for a period of time. They enter as Officer Cadets and study subjects relevant to both military and academic careers. In rare instances, the CAF may approve attendance at another Canadian University.

Training
After enrollment, basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School lasts 12 weeks.

Following basic officer training, optional second‑language training may take 2 to 9 months. Subsequent training includes an orientation course, two practical phases (8–11 weeks in summer), and a 17‑week occupational training course at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering.

Specialised skills courses include administrative and management skills and graduate training in engineering.

Part‑time Options
This position is available for part‑time employment with the Primary Reserve at certain locations across Canada. Reserve Force members typically serve 12 days per month and may serve full time for short durations. They are paid 92.8% of Regular Force rates, receive a reasonable benefits package and may qualify to contribute to a pension plan.
