Overview
Sr Specialist, Casualty Large Complex & Specialty Claims responsible for managing GL and ABI claims from start to finish, including complex specialty losses and those with multinational exposure. Works closely with underwriting, reinsurance, actuary, and senior leadership to ensure effective claim strategies and outcomes. Supports the evolution of claims capabilities to enable growth in current markets and specialty lines, and contributes to team development through mentoring and technical guidance.

Responsibilities

Manage large GL and ABI claims from intake through resolution, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all claim aspects.

Engage stakeholders—underwriting, reinsurance, actuary, and senior leadership—to coordinate claim strategy.

Support transformation of claims capabilities to drive policy growth in new markets and specialty lines.

Mentor and develop junior staff, providing technical guidance and coaching.

Conduct thorough investigation of each claim, contacting policyholders, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, agents, medical providers, and technical experts.

Select and coordinate internal or external resources required for claim evaluation.

Verify injury or damage extent by reviewing records and documentation.

Maintain GL and ABI claim files and document activities in accordance with established procedures.

Utilize diary management system to ensure timely handling of all claims and perform periodic liability and damages assessment.

Establish and maintain accurate indemnity and expense reserves.





Recommend cases for discussion at roundtables or authority meetings.

Present findings at roundtables to improve indemnity and expense payouts.

Share creative resolution techniques to enhance claim outcomes.

Develop and apply innovative resolution strategies.

Dispositively close all claims within delegated authority.

Negotiate claim settlements with insureds, claimants, and their legal representatives.

Identify alternate resolution methods when appropriate.

Manage litigated claims, including litigation planning, discovery, and legal expenses coordination.

Track and control legal expenses to ensure cost‑effective resolution.

Attend depositions, mediations, arbitrations, pre‑trials, trials, and other legal proceedings as required.

Update parties on new facts and their impact on liability and settlement options.

Refer cases that meet severity or complexity protocols to higher‑level claim professionals in a timely manner.

Handle personal and confidential information appropriately.

Meet specific service commitments for designated accounts.

Assess recovery potential and lead recovery efforts, engaging company resources as needed.

Qualifications





University degree in any discipline or a 2‑year college diploma from a provincially recognized and funded community college or a completed CIP designation.

Minimum of 8–10 years of general claims handling experience.

Experience with high‑value GL/ABI claims (>$150,000), environmental, abuse, construction, Coverage B, class actions, marine, national accounts with large SIR/deductibles, and additional insured determination.

Experience coaching and mentoring junior staff.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Salary
Salary Range: $73,500 – $123,500. Actual salary may vary depending on work location and other factors.
