Job Description
Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for planning, organizing and coordinating health and safety activities for the Kitchener plant and construction sites within the region. The advisor serves as an ambassador promoting health and safety, overseeing development of healthy and safety policies.
Responsibilities
Collaborate in the development and implementation of H&S; programs, policies, procedures and activities
Participate in the development of prevention programs and action plans and ensure their application
Support managers in implementing and maintaining prevention programs
Conduct regular inspections of workplaces and work methods to ensure safety rules are observed, protective equipment is used properly and safety devices are in good working order
Implement and maintain COR certification
Investigate and analyze accidents or risky situations, identify trends and sources, develop solutions and ensure application of corrective and preventive measures
Work with managers to develop and implement temporary assignments, accommodations and return-to-work plans for employees on occupational–related disability leave
Participate in risk analyses and recommend protected working methods
Develop H&S; training program that meets needs of employees and managers, lead or coordinate training sessions
Ensure employees receive necessary safety training per regulations and company standards
Coordinate and facilitate H&S; committees of the various establishments and follow up on recommendations
Initiate topics for toolbox meetings and facilitate H&S; breaks as needed
Coordinate development and implementation of the general emergency measures plan
Participate in setting priorities for actions to achieve objectives, follow corporate action plan
Participate in establishing H&S; indicators and statistics
Coach and advise supervisors and team leaders in H&S; matters, providing advice on improving managers' interventions in H&S; and prevention
Set up and update the WHMIS monitoring system
Qualifications
3 to 5 years of experience as a Health & Safety Advisor in construction
Construction Safety Officer (CSO) designation or applicable post‑secondary education in safety (an asset)
Ability to travel within the Kitchener region weekly
Knowledge and leadership skills, including mediation skills
Knowledge and application of applicable legislation and standards
