The Work
The Senior Account Manager, Special Loans and Restructuring is responsible for managing commercial default files and certain commercial loans designated as “problem accounts,” including conventional and construction facilities, while adhering to underwriting standards and the company’s policies and procedures (including AML requirements). The incumbent enforces the conditions of the mortgage contract on facilities in default as directed by management, provides proactive and efficient resolution strategies to avoid legal action when feasible while minimizing losses to the bank, and serves as the primary contact for communications with internal and external stakeholders, including legal counsel, real estate agents, brokers, partners, and other internal departments.
The role provides direct support to the Associate Director, Special Loans and Restructuring by performing a variety of functions associated with default management, including underwriting/credit analysis, portfolio management/monitoring, reporting, projects and initiatives, and other administrative duties. The incumbent also assists with completing site inspections as required.
Core Responsibilities
Manage and administer complex delinquent and problem commercial mortgages (generally loans exceeding $2.5 MM), process loans for legal action for non‑payment, conduct full financial reviews and recommend appropriate legal remedies, and enforce remedies and conditions as warranted,
ensuring compliance with default/workout strategies.
Perform, review, and correlate all aspects of underwriting, including collateral analysis and valuation, for defaulted loans and problem accounts, ensuring each submission addresses heightened risk elements, monitors risk ratings, and reports updates to internal stakeholders.
Work closely with the Mortgage Services team to manage, monitor, and resolve commercial delinquencies and certain default loans deemed non‑performing, providing timely updates to senior management.
Prepare various reports required by senior management, the board of directors, and external regulators, such as quarterly problem loan reports, monthly classified and watchlist reports, monthly arrears monitoring reports, provisioning reports, loan monitoring reports, and ad hoc reporting or analysis.
Collaborate with senior management to pursue operational efficiency, implement improvement measures, and lead ad hoc projects, current policies, and procedures to deliver superior service to stakeholders.
Qualifications
Minimum of 5–7 years of commercial mortgage experience or related, with previous default experience preferred.
Business degree or related discipline, and/or CPA or similar professional designation or equivalent work experience.
Understanding of mortgage enforcement remedies and foreclosures across Canada.
Effective analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Sound technical knowledge of secured lending and factors affecting the commercial mortgage market, with strong understanding of end‑to‑end processes.
Established and meticulous time‑management and organizational skills.
Strong multi‑tasking skills with attention to detail under tight timelines.
Proven ability to thrive in a constantly changing environment and perform under high intensity.
Self‑starter able to work independently.
Developed and effective negotiation and communication skills, both oral and written.
Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate with senior management and stakeholders.
Proficient in MS Office.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the provinces, with some overnight travel required from time to time.
Challenges and Expectations
The position requires the incumbent to make sound decisions/recommendations efficiently with often limited information. They must possess strong cognitive and professional judgement to manage their portfolio, follow corporate policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, and navigate the day‑to‑day challenges of default management. Timely resolution of problem loans, managing multiple defaults, and drawing on market knowledge to assess suitable solutions are crucial.

The incumbent will work hybrid, with in‑office time spent at Equitable Bank’s additional office at 2200‑25 Ontario Street, Toronto, ON.
