Do you enjoy solving bookkeeping problems for interesting, growing businesses?

Are you looking for a collaborative firm where you can deepen your technical skills, manage meaningful client relationships, and develop toward a future senior or reviewer role?

Harrop Scott & Associates Ltd. is seeking an Intermediate Bookkeeper to join our growing remote team.

About Harrop Scott & Associates

Harrop Scott & Associates is a Toronto-based bookkeeping and advisory firm supporting entrepreneurial businesses and not-for-profit organizations across Canada.

Our clients include creative and professional service firms, PR and advertising agencies, designers, architects, medical and healthcare professionals, technology companies, wholesalers, and other growing businesses.

We are passionate about clean books, strong processes, and providing business owners with financial information they can rely on. Our team works fully in the cloud using QuickBooks Online and complementary accounting applications.

We value accuracy, curiosity, collaboration, continuous learning, and thoughtful communication with both clients and teammates.

Purpose of the Role

The Intermediate Bookkeeper will manage a portfolio of monthly bookkeeping clients while continuing to develop the technical, client-service, and review skills required to progress into a future Senior Bookkeeper role.

This position is well suited to someone who is already confident completing full-cycle bookkeeping for multiple clients but still values guidance, feedback, and opportunities to strengthen their technical judgment.

The successful candidate will work closely with Senior Bookkeepers and reviewers, participate actively in file reviews, and gradually take on more complex client work and team responsibilities.

Compensation

We offer a competitive salary in the range of $54,000 - $62,000 annually

Key Responsibilities

Client Portfolio Management

- Manage an assigned portfolio of monthly bookkeeping clients.
- Complete full-cycle bookkeeping using QuickBooks Online.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and well-organized accounting records.
- Monitor client deadlines and ensure recurring work is completed according to established schedules.
- Communicate with clients to clarify transactions, obtain missing information, and respond to routine bookkeeping questions.
- Identify unusual transactions, inconsistencies, or potential issues and raise them promptly with the appropriate senior team member.

Reconciliations and Month-End Work

- Complete bank, credit card, loan, payroll, and other balance sheet reconciliations.
- Investigate and resolve reconciliation discrepancies.
- Review accounts receivable and accounts payable balances.
- Prepare month-end working papers and supporting schedules.
- Review trial balances and financial statements for errors, omissions, or unusual balances.
- Assist with year-end preparation and provide organized working papers for external accountants.

Government Filings and Payroll

- Prepare GST/HST returns and supporting reconciliations.
- Assist with payroll processing and payroll account reconciliations, where applicable.

- Prepare or support CRA remittances and filings, which may include payroll source deductions, T4s, Records of Employment, and Employer Health Tax filings.
- Escalate uncertain tax treatments or filing issues for senior review.

Team Collaboration and Development

- Work closely with Senior Bookkeepers and reviewers to continually improve technical skills and professional judgment.
- Participate constructively in file reviews and implement feedback accurately and promptly.
- Ask thoughtful questions and seek clarification when required.
- Participate in team training sessions and contribute observations, ideas, and practical examples.
- Support process documentation and recommend improvements that increase accuracy or efficiency.
- Assist with client onboarding and the transition of new engagements as required.

As the employee develops, the role may expand to include:

- Completing more complex client files and troubleshooting assignments.
- Reviewing selected work completed by junior bookkeepers.
- Providing explicit and constructive feedback to junior team members.
- Helping train or mentor newer employees.
- Supporting client onboarding, file transitions, and internal quality-control initiatives.
- Taking greater responsibility for client communication and portfolio oversight.

Required Qualifications

- At least three years of hands-on bookkeeping experience, preferably in a bookkeeping or accounting firm serving multiple clients.
- Strong practical experience using QuickBooks Online.
- QuickBooks Online certification or a willingness to obtain certification.
- Solid understanding of the full accounting cycle, including:

o Accounts receivable and accounts payable

o Bank and credit card reconciliations

o Payroll and payroll liabilities

o Balance sheet reconciliations

- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively through Slack, Zoom, email, and other online tools.
- Ability to manage multiple recurring deadlines and organize work across several client files.

Personal Attributes

- Collaborative and comfortable asking questions.
- Receptive to feedback and committed to continuous improvement.

- Dependable, organized, and accountable for meeting deadlines.
- Proactive in identifying errors, missing information, and opportunities to improve a file.
- Comfortable contributing ideas rather than simply following established routines.

- Respectful and professional in communications with clients and colleagues.

Assets

The following experience would be beneficial but is not required:
