Fleet Maintenance Shop Hand – Evenings & Weekends

Black Tar Construction is seeking a dependable, hands-on Fleet Maintenance Shop Hand to help keep our trucks, trailers, and construction equipment clean, maintained, inspected, and ready for work.

This position is primarily focused on evening and weekend fleet maintenance, making it ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, has basic mechanical knowledge, and is comfortable working around trucks and heavy construction equipment.

The main focus of this role is washing, greasing, inspecting, and completing basic repairs on our fleet after it returns from daily operations. By completing this work during evenings and weekends, you will play an important role in making sure our crews have protected, clean, and job-ready equipment for the next shift.

A mechanic's license is not required for this position.

Key ResponsibilitiesFleet Washing & Greasing

- Wash company trucks, trailers, and construction equipment
- Remove asphalt, dirt, mud, and debris from equipment
- Grease trucks, trailers, and equipment according to maintenance requirements
- Ensure equipment is properly cleaned and prepared for the next workday
- Keep the wash and maintenance areas clean and organized

Basic Fleet Maintenance & Repairs

- Complete basic repairs and maintenance as required
- Replace or repair dump truck sideboards
- Assist with minor truck, trailer, and equipment repairs
- Replace basic parts and components when required
- Identify loose, damaged, worn, or missing components
- Report larger mechanical concerns that require a mechanic

Visual Inspections

- Perform regular visual inspections of trucks, trailers, and equipment
- Check for visible damage, leaks, worn tires, lighting issues, loose components,



and other maintenance concerns
- Identify issues before they result in equipment downtime
- Ensure concerns are documented and communicated to Operations
- Help confirm equipment is ready for the following day's work

Fleet & Shop Support

- Assist with moving and organizing vehicles and equipment within the yard
- Keep fleet maintenance supplies, tools, and materials organized
- Assist with general shop and yard duties when required
- Support the maintenance team with preventative maintenance tasks
- Help ensure vehicles and equipment are returned to service quickly and safely

Schedule

This position is specifically intended to support our fleet outside of regular daytime operating hours.

Candidates must be available to work:

- Evenings
- Weekends
- Additional hours when fleet maintenance demands require it

Because our construction equipment is heavily used during the day, much of our washing, greasing, inspections, and preventative maintenance must be completed after crews return to the yard.

Reliable evening and weekend availability is an important requirement of this position.

Qualifications & Skills

- Previous experience working with trucks, trailers, construction equipment, fleet maintenance, or in a shop/yard environment is an asset
- Basic mechanical knowledge and confidence using hand and power tools




- Comfortable performing basic repairs and preventative maintenance
- Ability to identify obvious mechanical or equipment concerns during visual inspections
- Comfortable washing and greasing heavy equipment
- Physically capable of lifting, bending, climbing, and working around large equipment
- Comfortable working outdoors and in varying weather conditions
- Strong attention to detail
- Dependable and able to work independently
- Ability to follow maintenance and safety procedures
- Valid driver's licence with a clean driving record preferred
