Position Summary
Pleasant Valley Vineyard is seeking reliable and hardworking Vineyard Workers to support the cultivation, maintenance, and harvesting of grape vines and other orchard crops. The successful candidates will work in an organic farming and viticulture environment and will be responsible for maintaining healthy vines, managing grape production, performing field maintenance, and assisting with harvesting activities.
This is a physically demanding position requiring the ability to work outdoors in hot and changing weather conditions, perform repetitive tasks, and work independently or as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and manage the growth of grape vines, vine canopies, and grapes.
- Tie, secure, train, and support plants and vines to promote healthy growth and quality fruit production.
- Perform hoeing and cultivation between vineyard rows.
- Weed and clean crops and vineyard areas.
- Clear fields of wood, stones, and other debris.
- Apply and mix fertilizers and other approved crop treatments.
- Fertilize and spray crops in accordance with established farming practices.
- Assist with planting, cultivation, and general vineyard maintenance.
- Harvest grapes and other orchard crops when ready.
- Inspect crops and harvested products for quality and market readiness.
- Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment, including tractors, farm trucks, planting equipment, tillage equipment, and harvesting equipment.
- Use hand tools safely and efficiently.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Complete basic daily progress and work reports.
- Follow organic farming and vineyard production procedures.
- Follow all workplace health, safety, and equipment procedures.
- Perform other general farm and vineyard duties as required.
Work Environment
The position involves working:
- Outdoors in hot and changing weather conditions.
- In an organic farming and viticulture environment.
- In a fast-paced and physically demanding setting.
- Independently and as part of a team.
- With repetitive tasks and extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
- During early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime periods when required.
Physical Requirements
The successful candidate must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, crouch, kneel, sit, and perform repetitive movements.
- Work under pressure and meet tight deadlines during critical growing and harvesting periods.
- Handle loads of up to 45 kg (100 lbs) and, when required, heavier loads using appropriate equipment or assistance.
- Distinguish between colours for crop and plant inspection.
- Maintain a high level of attention to detail.
- Work safely in physically demanding conditions.
Qualifications and Requirements
- 2 to 3 years of relevant vineyard, orchard, farming, or agricultural experience preferred.
- No formal degree,
certificate, or diploma required.
- Experience working with grapes, vineyards, apples, or orchard fruit is an asset.
- Experience operating tractors and farm machinery is an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence required.
- Own transportation required, as public transportation is not available at the work location.
- First Aid Certificate is an asset/required where applicable.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Reliability, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow instructions and established agricultural procedures.
- Criminal record check may be required.
Employment Conditions
- Permanent, full-time employment.
- Approximately 32-40 hours per week.
- $17.70 per hour.
- Flexible scheduling based on vineyard and agricultural requirements.
- Morning, day, evening, weekend, and early-morning work may be required.
- Overtime may be required or available, particularly during planting, maintenance, and harvest periods.
- On-call availability may occasionally be required depending on weather and crop conditions.
