Court-Affiliated Family Mediator
Mediation Centre Ontario Inc. (MCOI) is seeking experienced and dedicated Court-Affiliated Family Mediators to join our team. We provide information and mediation services in numerous court locations throughout Ontario: London, Windsor, St Thomas, Woodstock, Stratford, Sarnia, Chatham, Goderich, Walkerton, and Owen Sound.
This is an excellent opportunity for an OAFM or FDRIO accredited family mediator who is committed to supporting families through the resolution of family law disputes in a professional, impartial, and respectful environment.
Position Overview
As a Court-Affiliated Family Mediator, you will provide family mediation services to individuals involved in family court proceedings. Working within the court-connected mediation system, you will assist parties in identifying issues, exploring options, and reaching informed and mutually acceptable resolutions.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with court staff, legal professionals, and clients while maintaining the highest standards of neutrality, confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical practice.
This paid position provides an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the family justice system while continuing to develop and strengthen your mediation practice.
** OAFM and/or FDRIO membership/accreditation is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct impartial and structured family mediations involving a range of family law issues.
- Conduct individual intake and screening meetings with each party prior to mediation.
- Identify and assess issues that may affect the suitability of mediation, including power imbalances, family violence, and safety concerns.
- Facilitate constructive communication and assist parties in exploring options for resolution.
- Remain neutral and impartial throughout the mediation process while supporting parties in making informed decisions.
- Provide clear information regarding the mediation process, including the role of the mediator and the nature of any agreements reached.
- Prepare accurate and timely mediation documentation, including agreements reached and, where applicable, reasons for impasse.
- Maintain complete, confidential, and professional file records in accordance with applicable policies, legislation, and contractual requirements of the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario.
- Work collaboratively with court personnel, lawyers, Legal Aid, community service providers, and other justice-sector professionals.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, training, and educational initiatives.
Qualifications & Skills
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Appropriate education, training, and experience in family mediation and/or alternative dispute resolution.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- The ability to remain neutral, impartial, and professional in challenging or emotionally complex situations.
- Strong assessment and conflict-resolution skills,
with the ability to identify issues and support constructive problem-solving.
- Knowledge of family law, court processes, and the principles governing family mediation.
- An understanding of confidentiality, professional ethics, screening, power imbalances, and family violence considerations in family mediation.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple files while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a collaborative professional team.
- A commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to applicable qualified standards.
