Yorktown Family Services- Violence Against Women Services provides a safe, supportive environment for women and children living in abusive relationships. Yorktown Shelter for Women operates a 30-bed shelter for abused women and children and provides related community programs, namely the Transitional Housing and Support Program and the Women and Communities Against Violence (WACAV) Program, which assists women fleeing abuse who remain in the community and the Here to Help program which is a support group program for children witnessing violence and their mothers.
Violence Against Women Services provides emergency shelter and crisis support for women and children fleeing abuse. We offer counselling, referrals, a 24-hour crisis line, court escort, advocacy and assistance with housing, social assistance, immigration, medical and legal services, children’s programs, early intervention for child witnesses of woman abuse, transitional support for women living in the community as well as those leaving the shelter.
Job Summary:
The Resident Women’s Advocate Worker will ensure the provision of support to women living at the Shelter, as well as, those leaving the Shelter, to re-establish themselves in the community.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct intake, assessment and discharge procedures as required
- Ensure the provision of supportive interventions whereby women are assisted to follow through with their pre-determined plans of action/goals
- Provide advocacy with respect to issues related, but not limited to housing, health, immigration, legal and other related matters
- Perform administrative functions specific to the overall functioning of the Shelter,
including telephone reception and intake, booking interpreters, daily log entries, ensure up to date resource information is maintained, etc.
- Accompaniment of clients to various community service providers as needed
- Ensure the provision of public education and outreach specific to the impact of violence on women and children
- Additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
- College Diploma in Human Services discipline or equivalent education and experience
- Minimum 2-year experience working within the VAW sector
- Knowledge of the impact of violence against women and children
- Extensive knowledge of the services available to women that assist them in re-establishing their violence free lives
- Experience in crisis intervention
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Second language an asset
- VSS (Vulnerable Sector Search) required
