Quality Assurance Manager - Food Manufacturing
Toronto, ON
Full-Time, Permanent
On-site (5 days per week)
Work Location: This is a fully in-person role based at the company's Toronto operations. The Quality Assurance Manager is expected to be on-site five days per week, working closely with the teams and processes that shape product safety and quality every day.
About the Company
We are a Toronto-based food company entering an exciting stage of growth. As we scale our operations, strengthen our systems, and prepare for continued expansion, we are building the infrastructure that will support our next chapter. We move quickly, solve problems hands-on, and value people who see what needs to be done and take ownership of making it happen.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to build, not simply maintain. You will help shape how food safety and quality are embedded across the business, create practical systems that can scale, and contribute directly to the company's success. If you bring an entrepreneurial mindset, sound judgment, and the drive to turn ideas into action, you will have the opportunity to make a visible and lasting impact.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a hands-on Quality Assurance Manager to lead and continuously strengthen our food safety and quality programs. You will own the systems, policies, and practices that protect our products and customers while enabling the business to grow responsibly. This role requires someone who can move confidently between strategy and execution - building a scalable management system, working alongside operational teams, interpreting regulatory requirements, and resolving issues at the source.
The right person is rigorous without being rigid, practical without lowering standards, and comfortable making well-reasoned decisions when not every answer is immediately available. You will bring structure to a fast-moving workplace, earn trust across the organization, and help make food safety and quality everyone's responsibility.
What You'll Do
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive food safety and quality management system that supports the company's current operations and future growth.
- Establish, document, communicate, and continuously improve food safety and quality policies, procedures, standards, and records.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian food safety requirements and relevant industry standards.
- Partner with operational teams to ensure effective sanitation, hygiene, allergen control, and pest control practices are in place and consistently followed.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of food handling, production, and processing areas; identify risks and drive timely corrective and preventive actions.
- Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies, coordinate inspections, and maintain a high level of audit and inspection readiness.
- Stay current on changes to Canadian food safety regulations, industry best practices, and requirements relevant to the company's current and target markets.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on current and emerging regulatory topics, market-entry requirements, and potential compliance hurdles.
- Monitor and analyze food safety and quality metrics, identify trends, and translate data into focused improvement priorities.
- Investigate customer complaints and food safety or quality concerns, complete thorough root-cause analysis, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
- Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to protect the safety and quality of raw materials and finished products.
- Identify gaps early, make practical decisions with the information available, and escalate material risks with clear recommendations.
- Develop and deliver practical training on food safety, product handling, storage, sanitation, documentation, and related procedures.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to embed food safety and quality into everyday decisions, processes, and accountability.
- Coach employees and leaders on expectations, reinforce best practices, and build a proactive culture in which issues are raised and resolved quickly.
- Communicate clearly with internal teams, regulators, suppliers, and other external stakeholders, adapting the level of detail to the audience.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in food science, food safety, microbiology, or a related field; a master's degree is an asset.
- At least four years of progressive experience in food safety or quality management, preferably in food manufacturing or processing.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian food safety requirements, including the Food and Drug Regulations and the Safe Food for Canadians Act and Regulations.
- Familiarity with or experience applying U.S. food safety requirements, including the Food Safety Modernization Act, Foreign Supplier Verification Program, and Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food rule.
- Strong knowledge of HACCP principles, food safety management systems, preventive controls, and relevant industry standards such as those recognized by GFSI.
- Experience with risk assessment, root-cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, and the use of data to support sound decisions.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and documentation skills, with consistent attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams and with regulatory agencies and external partners.
- A professional food safety certification, such as Certified HACCP Auditor or Certified Food Safety Manager, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of quality and food safety management systems such as ISO 22000, BRCGS,
or SQF is an asset.
How You Work
- Builder's mindset: You enjoy creating practical systems, improving what exists, and leaving the organization stronger than you found it.
- Entrepreneurial ownership: You think beyond your job description, connect your work to business outcomes, and take responsibility from problem through resolution.
- Bias for action: You move work forward, test practical solutions, and avoid letting imperfect information become an excuse for inaction.
- Sound judgment: You can assess risk, make decisions with limited information, and know when to pause, investigate, or escalate.
- Comfort with pace and ambiguity: You stay focused and adaptable as priorities shift, processes evolve, and the company scales.
- Hands-on approach: You are visible in the operation, curious about how work is actually done, and willing to solve problems alongside the team.
- High standards and pragmatism: You protect non-negotiable safety and quality standards while designing processes people can understand and follow.
- Low-ego collaboration: You communicate directly, listen well, welcome feedback, and build trust across functions and levels.
- Resilience and resourcefulness: You remain calm under pressure, find a path forward, and follow through on commitments.
If you are motivated by the opportunity to build a best-in-class food safety and quality function inside a scaling Toronto company - and want your work to have a direct impact on how the business grows - we would like to hear from you.
