Location: Southside Edmonton – In Office

Reports To: CFO and General Managers of both operating companies

Direct Reports: One (1) – AP/AR Administrator

Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent – Monday to Friday, 40 hours/week

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Controller to lead the day-to-day accounting operations of two affiliated construction companies. This is an operational accounting role, not an oversight-only position: the Controller personally performs full-cycle accounting — including payroll — for both entities, while supervising, training, and developing one direct report responsible for accounts payable and accounts receivable.

The ideal candidate brings a strong command of construction accounting, including work-in-progress (WIP) reporting and job costing, and is comfortable working directly with the General Manager of each company as a trusted financial partner — translating job-level financial data into information that supports operational decisions, project performance, and profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Full-Cycle Accounting (Two Entities)

- Perform full-cycle accounting for two operating companies, including journal entries, general ledger maintenance, account reconciliations, accruals, and intercompany transactions.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for each entity.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes for both companies, including supporting schedules and working papers.
- Prepare and file government remittances and returns (payroll source deductions, GST, WCB, and other statutory filings) and support the year-end review/audit and corporate tax process with external accountants.
- Oversee cash management, including cash flow monitoring and forecasting, banking, and progress draw / holdback administration.

Payroll (One Entity)

- Process payroll from start to finish for both companies, including hourly field staff and salaried employees.
- Administer source deductions, taxable benefits, records of employment, and year-end payroll filings (T4s).
- Ensure payroll compliance with employment standards and maintain accurate payroll records, including job/cost-code allocation of labour.

WIP, Job Costing & Project Accounting

- Maintain accurate job cost records across all active projects, ensuring costs are coded correctly and consistently.
- Prepare and analyze monthly WIP schedules, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, cost-to-complete estimates, and over/under billing analysis.
- Review job profitability with the General Managers, flagging cost overruns, margin erosion, and billing issues early.
- Support project budgeting, committed-cost tracking, and change order accounting.

Team Leadership & Development

- Supervise one direct report responsible for accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Provide hands-on training, coaching, and day-to-day guidance to build the AP/AR Administrator's skills and confidence.
- Establish clear procedures, review work for accuracy, and develop documented processes and internal controls for the AP/AR function.

Business Partnership

- Work directly with the General Manager of each company as their primary finance partner.
- Deliver clear, timely reporting on financial results,

job performance, and cash position, and explain what the numbers mean for operations.
- Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and pricing/estimating support as needed.
- Identify and implement improvements to accounting systems, processes, and reporting.

Qualifications & Experience

- CPA designation (required).
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting responsibility; construction, homebuilding, or trades industry experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with WIP reporting, job costing, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
- Hands-on payroll processing experience, ideally across multiple entities or a mix of hourly and salaried staff.
- Experience supervising, training, or mentoring accounting staff.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online (QBO) required; strong Excel skills.
- Experience managing accounting for multiple related entities, including intercompany transactions, is an asset.

Key Attributes

- A doer: comfortable owning the books end-to-end, not just reviewing others' work.
- Highly organized and deadline-driven, able to manage competing priorities across two companies.
- A patient teacher and coach who invests in developing junior staff.
- Strong communicator who can explain financial results to non-financial operational leaders.
- High integrity, discretion, and attention to detail.

What We Offer

- Full time, in-office role – Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.
- Benefits package – health, dental, vision, HSA.
- A visible, high-impact role working directly with senior leadership across two growing construction businesses.

Pay: $90,000.00-$110,000.00 per year

Benefits:

- Dental care
- In office parking
- Vision care

Work Location: In person
