We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) to join our growing surgical team.

Position Summary

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) plays an essential role in supporting all phases of the patient's surgical journey, including pre-operative preparation, intraoperative assistance, post-operative recovery, patient education, and discharge planning.

The successful candidate will work closely with ophthalmologists, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, ophthalmic technicians, and administrative staff to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care throughout the surgical experience.

Responsibilities

Pre-operative Care

- Welcome and prepare patients for cataract surgery
- Verify patient identity, surgical procedure, laterality, and consent
- Perform pre-operative nursing assessments
- Obtain and document vital signs
- Review allergies, medications, and relevant medical history
- Assist with patient preparation according to surgical protocols
- Educate patients regarding the surgical process and post-operative expectations
- Ensure documentation is complete and accurate before surgery

Intraoperative Support

- Assist the surgical team during cataract procedures
- Function as a circulating nurse within the operating room
- Maintain sterile technique and infection prevention practices
- Prepare and organize surgical supplies and equipment
- Anticipate surgeon and team needs during procedures
- Monitor patient status throughout surgery
- Ensure accurate documentation of intraoperative nursing records





Post-Anesthesia Recovery (PACU)

- Monitor patients during recovery from local anesthesia with minimal or moderate sedation
- Assess vital signs, pain level, nausea, and overall recovery
- Identify and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition
- Provide discharge education to patients and caregivers
- Ensure discharge criteria are met before patient release

Clinical & Safety Responsibilities

- Follow CPSO Out-of-Hospital Premises standards and organizational policies
- Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in accordance with PHIPA
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Report incidents, safety concerns, and near misses
- Maintain emergency preparedness
- Support Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) standards
- Assist with inventory management and supply organization as needed
- Participate in staff education, competency assessments, and ongoing professional development

Required Qualifications:

- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
- Current BCLS (CPR) certification
- Minimum 1–2 years of recent nursing experience
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced ambulatory surgical environment
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety and quality care
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR)

Preferred Qualifications:

- Previous experience in:
- Ophthalmology
- Day surgery
- Ambulatory surgery
- Operating Room
- PACU/Recovery Room
- Experience assisting with cataract surgery
- Knowledge of aseptic technique and surgical workflow




- Familiarity with CPSO Out-of-Hospital Premises standards

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday
- Day shifts: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- No Night Shift

Compensation:

- At Ajax Ophthalmology Associate Surgery Centre, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package and is determined within a range of $ 25 - $ 30 / per hour. Our pay ranges are based on the local cost of labor benchmarks for each specific role, level, and geographic location.
