HUMN 100/101 Seminar Leader – Duties and Responsibilities

As a Seminar Leader, you will support the successful delivery of the course by facilitating student engagement, assisting with assessments, and coordinating with the course instructor.

Key Responsibilities

- Attend two weekly lectures and remain current with all assigned course readings.
- Facilitate the final hour of each class using discussion and reflection prompts provided by the course instructor.
- Lead small-group discussions and individual reflection activities to support student learning.
- Be responsible for three seminar sections (approximately 90 students). Section assignments will be finalized based on course registration to ensure an equitable distribution of students among Seminar Leaders.
- Collect and track in-class written work as a record of student attendance.
- Assist with attendance management for a large-enrollment course of approximately 500 students across two lecture sections.
- Proctor the in-person midterm and final examinations.
- Grade all assigned examinations in collaboration with the Seminar Leader team.
- Respond to student inquiries related to examinations.
- Meet regularly with the course instructor to discuss course progress, student engagement, and assessment planning.

There are 15 seminar sections. The course is expected to have five Seminar Leaders, with each leader assigned three sections. Responsibilities such as grading and attendance tracking will be shared among the team.

Employment Expectations
Your hours of work will be those reasonably required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Additional duties related to the course may be assigned from time to time.

The course instructor will evaluate your performance and participation during the appointment. Feedback from Seminar Leaders is also encouraged and will help inform future course planning.

Compensation
The stipend for this appointment is $5,814.40 for the two-term appointment. This amount includes:

- A 4% allowance in lieu of vacation pay.
- A 4.4% allowance in lieu of statutory holiday pay.

The stipend represents compensation for all work performed during the appointment. There is no entitlement to overtime pay, additional compensation,



or time off in lieu for hours worked beyond those required to fulfill the position’s responsibilities. Payment will be made semi-monthly over the term of the appointment.

About the Course

HUMN 100 – Academic Core I and HUMN 101 – Academic Core II are foundational Humanities courses in Emily Carr University’s Critical + Cultural Studies curriculum. Together, they introduce students to critical reading, writing, visual and textual analysis, and the study of art, media, design, and culture across diverse historical and global contexts.

Through a combination of weekly lectures and seminar discussions, students develop skills in critical thinking, visual analysis, academic writing, and collaborative learning. The courses draw on perspectives from Art, Media + Design History, Visual Culture, English, Composition and Rhetoric, and Cultural and Media Studies, encouraging students to examine how images, texts, and cultural practices shape and reflect social, political, and historical contexts.

Seminar Leaders play an essential role in supporting student learning by facilitating discussion, encouraging critical engagement with course materials, and helping students develop the analytical and communication skills that underpin future studies in Critical + Cultural Studies.

Required Qualifications

We are seeking a graduate student currently enrolled in an MA, MFA, or PhD program, with at least a Bachelor’s degree completed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience grading first-year writing courses is considered an asset but is not required.
