Position OverviewThe ASL/English Interpreter provides high quality, professional interpretation services for Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals in the workplace, educational, and community environments. This role supports classrooms, schools, and First Nations communities by delivering simultaneous, consecutive, and educational interpretation in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English.

Education

- Graduate from an accredited post-secondary American Sign Language (ASL)/ English Interpreter Program

Certification/Licensure/Registration

- Membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI), formerly Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC)
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license, and an insured vehicle

Qualifications and Skills

- Fluency in both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English
- Demonstrated experience interpreting between ASL and English
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- Solid interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate to and communicate effectively with children, parents/caregivers, and other professionals
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and awareness of supports available for students and staff




- Ability to develop, plan and prepare ASL teaching and learning materials for individuals and groups as part of a team
- Willingness and ability to travel to rural and remote First Nations communities
- Demonstrated appreciation for and respect of First Nations self-determination and education reform strategies
- Experience working in a First Nations education setting is an asset
- Experience using technology such as Microsoft 365 (Teams, Word, Outlook), webinars, Zoom, Adobe Pro, videoconferencing platforms, iMovie, and video editing, captioning, and design tools are considered assets
