Job Overview:

The Youth Support Relative, under the supervision of the Health Director, supports Indigenous children and youth who are at risk of involvement with the Child and Family Services (CFS) system. Working within a prevention-focused framework, the Youth Support Relative builds trusting relationships with youth and their families while promoting cultural identity, resilience, and overall well-being. The role emphasizes early intervention, cultural connection, and strengths-based support to help youth remain safely connected to their families, communities, and cultures. Overall, the position contributes to CFS prevention by empowering Indigenous youth, strengthening family connections, and fostering supportive environments that promote long-term stability and wellness.

Responsibilities:

· Provide one-on-one mentorship, group programming, and community-based support that encourage positive decision-making, emotional wellness, and life skills development

· Support youth in strengthening their cultural identity through participation in Indigenous teachings, traditions, land-based or cultural activities and ceremony

· Connect with local Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Community members to plan cultural teachings, offer workshops, healing circles, and land-based activities

· Coordinate activities to promote health and well-being, plan social nights and community feasts for youth, and workshops/presentations as requested

· Promote wellness to the holistic self; Spiritual, Mental, Physical and Emotional

· Provide input for culture-based work plans that supports program and service design and provision for children, youth, and families





· Work collaboratively with families, Elders, community partners, and service providers to address barriers that may place youth at risk of CFS involvement

· Help connect youth and families with culturally relevant resources and services

· Maintain regular contact with youth and families, assist with goal setting, and support youth in areas such as school engagement, emotional regulation, peer relationships, and community involvement

· Documentation, case coordination and participation in team and staff meetings as required

· Provide latest program information and updated statistics as required

· Attend scheduled staff meetings and perform other duties as required

Requirements:

· Must have diploma in Indigenous studies/social services/child and youth worker or a minimum of 3 years related work experience within Indigenous youth, organization or community

· Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach

· Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous children, youth and families in a healing and wellness capacity

· 3-5 years work-related experience is required





· Recent satisfactory criminal record check including vulnerable sector check required

· Strong interpersonal skills with good oral and written communication

· Valid First Aid/CPR Required

· Experience working in an Indigenous Community including knowledge of First Nations Culture, traditions and values is considered an asset

· Must possess strong assessment, communication, organizational, problem solving, and counselling skills.

· Must be able to work both independently and as a part of a team and possess a valuable understanding of the determinants of health.

· Able to work positively, effectively and cooperatively within an interdisciplinary team.

· Knowledge of computer applications, including basic word processing, email, electronic charting, internet access, and data entry required.

· Willing to obtain a class 4 driver’s license

· Ability to work a variety of shifts including daytime, evening and on-call on alternating weekends.

· Successful candidate will be required to travel to Fort McMurray #468 First Nation daily
