OVERVIEW:

Are you passionate about animals and love connecting with people? Join our team as an Adoption Counsellor to become a welcoming face at our front desk! This role is all about people and pets. As an Adoption Counsellor, you will be tasked with matching animals with loving homes through genuine, thoughtful conversations.

You will also provide support to members of the public looking to redeem a lost pet, rehome animals in need, and navigate bringing their recent pet home. Some other duties include answering phones, processing donations, record keeping, and promoting our fundraising efforts. QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License is required.
- Must have a genuine interest in and concern for the overall well-being of animals and demonstrate empathy and compassion for shelter animals.
- Some previous experience working in a front-facing office is preferred.
- Experience working with Microsoft Office programs and Shelter databases is preferred.
- Must be able to prepare comprehensive reports as required.
- Must be able to multi-task in various administrative functions, organize resources, and establish priorities.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with the public.
- Knowledge of animal welfare and breed identification of both felines and canines considered an asset.
- Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
- Previous retail sales and animal-related experience will be considered an asset. Training will be given to those without this experience.




- Must be comfortable handling large dogs and able to lift heavy items as part of daily duties.
- Must be familiar with and supportive of the goals and missions of the Saskatoon SPCA.

NATURE OF WORK: This position reports directly to shelter management and serves as the front-facing role of our organization. As the first person visitors see when walking through the door, the Adoption Counsellor is responsible for creating a warm, welcoming environment. A large part of this role involves engaging with members of the public in a wide range of situations.

The ideal candidate will be able to navigate all interactions with empathy, professionalism, and excellent customer service. In addition to working with the public, the Adoption Counsellor processes transactions, maintains shelter records, and performs other clerical tasks as needed.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

- Reviewing and approving adoption applications and making first contact with applicants.
- Facilitating visits between adoptable animals and shelter visitors.
- Working closely with adopters to ensure they feel supported throughout the adoption process.
- Processing adoptions, owner surrenders, and redemptions.
- Working with partner organizations to complete incoming and outgoing animal transfers.
- Conducting pound-checks with individuals looking for their lost pet.




- Performing daily cross-checks using lost and found reports.
- Answering and directing incoming phone calls.
- Monitoring the voicemail inbox and following up on messages.
- Assisting with promotion of all fundraising and special events.
- Working with Animal Care Attendants to send animals to out-of-shelter adoption events.
- Processing transactions including adoptions, monetary donations, and fees.
- Maintaining a cash float; ensuring the till is balanced at the end of each day.
- Screening, counting, sorting, and putting away incoming in-kind donations.
- Responsible for knowing and adhering to shelter policies and procedures.
- Maintaining a neat and professional personal appearance in accordance with the dress code.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization in the front office.
- Responsible for performing duties in a professional, proactive manner to achieve and maintain good public relations and excellent customer service.
- Attending all staff meetings and relevant training sessions.
- Reporting Occupational Health and Safety concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Reporting office supply and maintenance repairs as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

The Saskatoon SPCA is currently hiring for a temporary part-time position, with regularly scheduled shifts on Wednesday - Friday, and Saturday OR Sunday each week.
