Reports to: Director of Animal Care & Operations

Overview

Under the direction of Shelter Management or designate, the Animal Care Attendant will take on departmental functions that ensure the health and safety and well-being of the animals that come under the care of the Saskatoon SPCA. The Saskatoon SPCA is interested in applicants who have previous experience in animal husbandry and in customer relations. Previous experience in an animal shelter or clinic setting would be considered an asset.

Qualifications & Skills

- Minimum of Grade 12.
- Preference will be given to applicants with previous animal husbandry experience. Preferred knowledge in animal welfare practices related to animal sheltering, adoptions, and euthanasia.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License
- Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration, with the ability to foster the same amongst others.
- Must possess clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Must have a genuine interest in animal welfare and demonstrate empathy and compassion for all animals.
- Ability to manage the physical requirements of the position for extended periods of time including restraining animals, lifting, and scrubbing floors, cages, etc.
- Computer literacy is required. Database literacy is considered an asset.
- Ability to function effectively under challenging circumstances and accept direction.
- Organizational skills in order to meet time demands and multiple duties.

Nature of Work

- Reports to Shelter Management or designate.
- Responsible for monitoring the health and behavior of all shelter animals
- Weekend work may be required

Principle Accountabilities

- Adhere to departmental policies and procedures,



promoting the Saskatoon SPCA’s mission and values related to animal welfare.
- Work closely and correspond regularly with fellow team members regarding departmental needs and activity, providing relevant updates on a regular basis to shelter management.
- Build and foster relationships with staff, volunteers, veterinary clinics and student groups.
- Regular and ongoing cleaning and disinfecting of the facility, including common areas, kennels, cages, and equipment.
- Provide animals with appropriate housing, food, and clean water.
- Perform shelter rounds and population monitoring.
- Perform intake examinations of all animals, including checking for identification, administering vaccinations, deworming, and other treatments as required. Schedule and complete follow-up examinations and treatments.
- Identify and address medical and behavioral concerns following shelter protocols.
- Administer medications to animals following standard operating procedures or as prescribed by licensed veterinarians.
- Perform routine post-operative examinations of all animals after surgery and process surgery paperwork.
- Assess and make recommendations for animals to be placed for adoption.
- Assist with departmental inventory control.
- Able to handle and restrain animals of multiple species and temperaments safely. Display a commitment to humane and low-stress handling methods.
- Other duties as assigned

Work Schedule This is a 3-month term position with the possibility of renewal at the end of the term. Full-time, Part time, & casual positions available.
