Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is running a competition to fill the Asphalt Plant Operator (OR5) position in Portage la Prairie. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is responsible for establishing and managing public infrastructure, including: provincial highways and roads, highway bridges and structures, water and flood control works, and northern airports and marine services. It develops, communicates and administers motor carrier regulatory and safety services.

The department also oversees and coordinates emergency preparedness, emergency response and disaster recovery to prevent the loss of life and minimize damages to property and the environment. Duties:

The Asphalt Plant Operator reports to Asphalt Mixing Supervisor, the incumbent’s primary responsibilities are the operation, setup, and maintenance of the Asphalt Plant producing up to 125 tonnes per hour; the operation of the loader, including loading materials and stockpiling; conducting quality checks; and managing production records. Under the direction of the Asphalt Mixing Supervisor, they also operate and transport various heavy and light equipment and assist with the setup and teardown of mobile camps. In the absence of the crew supervisor, the incumbent may oversee program operations and perform computer-based record keeping, including calibration of electronic loader-mounted scales.

Qualifications:

Essential

Thorough knowledge of light and heavy equipment operation, including pre-trip inspections, maintenance, and basic repair.





Demonstrated hands-on experience operating and maintaining a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

Knowledge of WHMIS and Workplace Safety and Health policies and procedures

Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external stakeholders.

Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively manage multiple priorities in order to meet objectives and deadlines.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Availability to support branch emergency response operations throughout the province, including activities such as sandbagging, dam construction, inventory management, loading, and operation of emergency response trailers, goods, and equipment during flooding and fire events. Conditions of Employment:

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

Must possess and maintain a valid class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement

Must be willing to obtain a Class 1 license within 6 months of obtaining the position

Must be able to operate both heavy and light-duty equipment, as required

Must be able to travel frequently to work sites within the province by ground, air or water transportation

Must be able to work in environments with elevated noise levels when operating or working around equipment

Must be able to work extended hours or irregular hours such as shift work, weekends, evenings, statutory holidays, involving overnight stays (i.e. hotel/motel or possibly in a camp setting)

Must be physically capable of performing the required duties of the position such as prolonged sitting, medium lifting (carrying up to 35 kg), walking (on possible uneven surfaces), wearing of Personal Protective Equipment and working under possible adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc.) Benefits
