Aroma Espresso Bar - Bay and Charles

Toronto

We are an independently owned and operated Aroma Espresso Bar franchise location in Toronto looking for a hands-on Assistant Café Manager.

This is a working management role. You will learn the café from the floor up, become cross-trained across front-of-house and kitchen operations, help lead busy shifts, train staff, and gradually take on broader responsibility for running the store.

Our café serves a mix of regular customers, office traffic, students, and neighborhood guests, with a particularly busy lunch period. We value strong standards, clear communication, accountability, and people who notice what needs to be done.

What You’ll Do

- Help run daily shifts, including station assignments, breaks, rush-period adjustments, and shift handoffs
- Work hands-on across cash, bar, dispatch and online orders, food preparation, kitchen, dishes, cleaning, restocking, opening, and closing
- Cross-train across the full operation so you understand and can support the work you are responsible for managing
- Train new employees and coach existing team members
- Maintain standards for drinks, food, customer service, cleanliness, dining areas, washrooms, and store presentation
- Support inventory, receiving, ordering, stock levels, and product readiness
- Help coordinate front-of-house and kitchen operations during busy periods
- Complete and oversee daily checklists, shift handoffs, reporting, and operational follow-up
- Identify problems early, take appropriate action, and communicate clearly
- Help maintain a professional, positive, and accountable team environment

As your responsibility grows, you will also become involved in scheduling, labour management, inventory and cost control, staff development, and other aspects of running the store.

Full Cross-Training Is Required

Our managers are expected to understand the work they manage.

You do not need to know every station or recipe when you start. We will train you.

You do need to be willing to become capable across both front-of-house and back-of-house operations, including the kitchen, work the positions yourself, coach others, and step in where the store needs you.

Management responsibility grows with operational capability.

What We’re Looking For

- Relevant café, restaurant, bakery, quick-service, or other food-service experience
- Barista experience strongly preferred
- Leadership experience as a shift lead, supervisor, assistant manager, or manager is an asset
- Strong baristas or hospitality professionals ready to move into management are also encouraged to apply
- Strong customer-service instincts
- Calm and organized during busy service periods
- Able to notice problems and act without always waiting to be told
- Clear communication with staff and customers
- Reliable, responsible, and comfortable taking ownership
- Willing to learn, accept feedback, and work alongside the team
- Genuine willingness to learn kitchen and food-production operations
- Robust cleanliness and food-safety habits
- Food Handler certification is an asset and will be required for the role
- Able to commute reliably to a downtown Toronto location

Open availability is required. You must be available to work according to store needs, including:

- Early mornings and opening shifts
- Weekdays
- Lunch periods
- Afternoon and closing shifts
- Saturdays and Sundays
- Statutory holidays when the café is open

This role requires flexibility across the weekly schedule rather than availability limited to particular days or shift types. If you have one regular fixed commitment, such as a class or other standing obligation, please mention it when applying.

Pay & Development

Starting pay is $22–$24 per hour plus tips, depending on experience and demonstrated ability.

Training is structured and hands-on. We use defined station standards, checklists, shift references, and daily operating routines so expectations are clear.

As you demonstrate the ability to run shifts independently, work confidently across the operation, train staff, maintain standards, coordinate FOH and kitchen, and take ownership of operational responsibilities, there will be opportunities for:

- Increased responsibility
- Compensation review
- Performance incentives

Growth is based on demonstrated performance and responsibility. If you have management or supervisory experience, we are especially interested in what you personally owned, such as shift leadership, training, scheduling, inventory and ordering, opening and closing, cost control, or team management.

We care more about demonstrated capability and ownership than job titles alone.

Pay: $22.00-$24.00 per hour

Benefits

- Discounted or free food

Experience:
- Food Service Management: 1 year (required)
- Food service: 3 years (required)

Work Location: In person
