THE OPPORTUNITY
Calabogie Peaks is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead its day-to-day accounting, financial reporting and finance systems function. The Controller will provide accurate and timely financial information, strengthen controls and processes, support cash flow and operational decision-making, and develop a resilient finance function that can perform effectively through seasonal peaks. POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the General Manager, the Controller is the senior on-site finance lead for the resort's operating and holding entities. This is a working leadership role that combines financial reporting, accounting operations, planning, internal controls, systems improvement and team development. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between detailed accounting work and practical financial guidance for management and department leaders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Financial reporting and close
- Own the monthly and year-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, intercompany balances and supporting schedules.
- Prepare timely management reporting, budget-to-actual results, variance analysis and clear commentary for management and ownership.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and coordinate the year-end file with external accountants and financial stakeholders. Finance operations and controls
- Oversee accounts payable coding, vendor setup, payment preparation, corporate cards and approval workflows.
- Prepare short-term cash-flow forecasts and support treasury, payment timing and working-capital decisions.
- Review bank reconciliations, revenue and clearing accounts, HST returns,
payroll and accounts receivable processes prepared by the Revenue & Payroll Manager, while maintaining effective segregation of duties.
Planning and business partnership
- Support the annual budget and forecasting process, maintain approved budgets and monitor financial performance throughout the year.
- Translate financial results into practical insights for resort management, including analysis for pricing, cost control, capital spending and operational decisions.
Systems, process and team leadership
- Lead continuous improvement of finance processes, reporting tools, integrations and automation while maintaining reliable data and appropriate controls.
- Own finance documentation, recurring calendars and cross-training plans.
- Supervise and develop the Revenue & Payroll Manager and coordinate additional accounting support during peak periods when required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least five years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of month-end close, financial reporting and reconciliations.
- Experience supervising or reviewing accounting staff and partnering with operational leaders.
- A CPA designation is an asset but is not required; robust accounting judgment and practical experience are essential.
- Experience in a multi-entity, hospitality, resort, recreation, food and beverage, property or seasonal environment is a strong asset.
- Strong proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel;
experience with cloud accounting, payment, payroll, POS/PMS or automation tools is preferred. WHAT YOU BRING
- A hands-on, accountable approach and a high standard of accuracy, integrity and confidentiality.
- Strong analytical judgment and the ability to identify issues early and recommend practical solutions.
- Clear, respectful communication with finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- The ability to prioritize recurring deadlines and lead change through seasonal operating demands.
