The Prospect

We are looking for an experienced MS SQL Database Developer / Administrator to own and evolve the data platform behind our provisioning systems, billing automation, call tracking, and enterprise reporting. This is a hands-on hybrid role: part development, part administration, across a heterogeneous environment (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB) with a strong ETL and data warehousing component.

If you like being the person who understands how the data actually flows — who can write the stored procedure, tune the index, build the SSIS package, ship the report, and then explain it to the billing team in plain language — this role will suit you. You will have a direct line to the people making decisions and the freedom to fix things properly rather than paper over them.

In your first year, you will

- Take full ownership of our SQL Server estate—performance, reliability, backup, and recovery.
- Modernize and consolidate the ETL processes that feed billing and call-tracking data into our data warehouse.
- Deliver reporting that the operations and finance teams rely on daily, and retire the manual work it replaces.
- Document what is currently tribal knowledge so the platform is maintainable by more than one person.

What You Will Do

Database development

- Design, develop, and optimize T-SQL stored procedures, functions, views, and triggers supporting business applications.
- Review and refactor existing database code for correctness, performance, and maintainability.
- Write and maintain Python scripts for automation, data validation, and integration tasks (e.g., cx_Oracle, pyodbc).
- Use version control (Git) to manage database scripts, packages, and deployment artifacts.

Database administration and reliability

- Administer and maintain SQL Server instances, including performance tuning, indexing strategy, and capacity planning.
- Implement and manage backup and recovery strategies—full, differential, and log backups; disaster recovery planning; and regular restore testing.
- Monitor database health, troubleshoot performance issues, and resolve incidents such as transaction log growth, blocking, and deadlocks.
- Support and integrate data from Oracle and MySQL databases alongside SQL Server environments.
- Work with VMware virtualized infrastructure to support database server provisioning and maintenance.

ETL and data warehousing

- Build, deploy,



and maintain SSIS packages to move and transform data across systems.
- Design and implement data warehouse architecture using established practices—dimensional modelling, star and snowflake schemas, and slowly changing dimensions.
- Develop and maintain robust ETL processes for ingestion, transformation, and loading across multiple source systems, with proper error handling, logging, and reconciliation.

Reporting and analytics

- Design and maintain reporting solutions in SSRS, including parameterized and subscription-based reports.
- Build and maintain OLAP cubes and tabular models in SSAS to support analytics and BI reporting.
- Partner with stakeholders to make sure reports answer the question that was actually asked.

Collaboration and documentation

- Work with engineering, billing, and operations teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Maintain documentation for database schemas, ETL workflows, and operational runbooks.
- Contribute to change management and release practices for database deployments.

What You Bring

We care more about demonstrated capability than a checklist. If you meet most of the following and can show us work you’re proud of, we want to hear from you.

- 5 years of experience as a SQL Server database developer, administrator, or a combined role.
- Robust T-SQL proficiency—query writing, execution plan reading, performance tuning, and indexing.
- SSIS — hands-on experience building and maintaining production packages.
- SSRS — developing reports and subscriptions.
- SSAS — working knowledge of multidimensional or tabular models.
- Oracle — practical administration or development experience.
- MySQL — familiarity with MySQL environments.
- MongoDB - familiarity with and hands-on experience and solid understanding of non-relational/document databases
- Python — proficiency for scripting and automation.
- Data warehousing — solid understanding of design principles and ETL best practices.
- Backup and DR — experience implementing backup strategies and disaster recovery procedures.
- VMware — basic familiarity with virtualization concepts.
- Education - a degree in computer science, information systems, or equivalent practical experience. We treat equivalent experience as equivalent.

Nice to have

- Experience in telecom, billing, or call-tracking systems.
- Cross-database automation — for example, syncing data between Oracle and SQL Server.
- Familiarity with job scheduling tools and monitoring / alerting frameworks.
- Exposure to cloud-hosted database environments (Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, or similar).
- Experience introducing CI/CD or automated deployment for database changes.

- This role is on-site in the Greater Toronto Area. Our systems and teams are here, and we’ve found that proximity matters for this role. Day-to-day scheduling is flexible; the expectation of being in the office is not.
- There is an on-call component. These are production systems that our clients depend on. On-call is shared and infrequent, and we invest in monitoring and automation specifically so that nights and weekends stay quiet. We will be candid about the current volume during the interview process.
