Heritage Planning InternWage $24.04 - 26.00/hour (2026)Reports to Manager, Economic DevelopmentDepartment Development ServicesLocation City of Kawartha Lakes, ONHours August 2026 - March 2027. Normal working hours are 35 hours per week (core hours 8am - 5pm, Mon-Fri)Other Start date August 2026. Combination of general office setting and occasional travel. Attend meetings and conferences, which may be outside of normal business hours.An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
Are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
Are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment;
andare a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).Note:
Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.Position Summary
Under the direction of the Economic Development Officer – Heritage Planning,



this position will assist with the implementation of the designation strategy for culturally significant properties in the City of Kawartha Lakes by providing program coordination, background research, report writing and administrative support. This position will contribute to efforts to protect and conserve cultural and heritage assets within the City in relation to the impacts of Provincial legislative changes as defined in the Ontario Heritage Act and the Planning Act.Specific to this role:Assist with the implementation of the City’s designation strategy for culturally significant propertiesConduct research and analysis of properties on the City’s Heritage Register and inventory of cultural heritage resourcesAttend site visits, Municipal Heritage Committee meetings and Council meetings as requiredProvide technical support and research assistance to the Heritage teamAs a member of the team:Administer defined procedures and recommend solutions to challenges or process improvementsWork collaboratively with others to deliver the outcomes as defined;
report any challenges to supervisorRespond to customer service concerns, investigating, problem solving, and responding within defined processes and advancing to the attention of supervisor, as appropriateMaintain documentation and or databases and corporate records in accordance with policy and divisional practice;




consider legislative municipal requirements such as Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA)Contribute to the development of program needsProvide data or input on processes to allow reporting and decision makingPerform other related duties as assignedQualifications
Post-secondary degree in Architecture, Planning, Heritage, Canadian Studies or a related fieldDemonstrated understanding in areas of Heritage ConservationKnowledge of the Ontario Heritage Act policies and processes and heritage-related aspects of the Planning ActStrong research, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skillsEffective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills;
Excellent written communication skills;
attention to detail andaccuracyDemonstrated customer service skills at a level to develop and maintain cooperative/collaborative working relationships both within and outside the organizationDemonstrated time-management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines with minimal supervisionDemonstrated ability to exercise discretion and tact and maintain a high degree of confidentiality at all times, complying with all applicable privacy legislation and local policies and proceduresDemonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, the internet and any other related softwarePossess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence or the ability to frequently attend work related activities at various sites within the municipality or at other sites within OntarioUpon a conditional offer of employment, a Criminal Record Check will be requiredCandidates must be prepared for skill testingPlease note that funding is pending for this position.
