Position Summary
Perinatal Sonographer I utilizes high frequency sound waves along with color and spectral Doppler ultrasound to assist in the monitoring and growth during pregnancy. Sonographers within KU's OB/GYN MFM Department are leading the region with their practices.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positioning patients for proper view of the affected area, selecting appropriate scan images to be recorded, and obtaining essential information from patients, medical records, and previous scans for clinical correlation.
Instructs patients about the proper physiological requirements for the procedure, assists patient transfer to exam table, and ensures adequate patient immobilization to perform the scan; adjusts scanning parameters to improve a scan.
Obtains diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part with the transducer and provides documentation of ultrasound exam sufficient for physicians to interpret.
Assists physicians with ultrasound‑guided procedures and may participate in student and physician education.
Maintains work area, including medical supplies for procedures.
Must be able to perform the qualified, clinical and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
Other duties may be assigned as required.
Required Education and Experience
High School Graduate
Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program that meets American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (A.R.D.M.S.) requirements.
Required Licensure and Certification
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) – American Heart Association (AHA)
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS); RDMS credential must be earned within 90 days of first date of employment.
Preferred Licensure and Certification
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) credential in Abdomen Specialty Exam.
Knowledge Requirements
Ability to train in areas of competency.
