JOB TITLE: Chef Apprentice

LOCATION: Various Northern Sites across the Arctic

TYPE: Unionized, Rotational Position (6 weeks on, 6 weeks off)

This position is part of Nasittuq’s Inuit Training and Development Program (ITDP), an 3-year program reserved for beneficiaries of the Nunavut, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit land claim groups, in line with our commitments under the North Warning System contract.

The ITDP is a structured program that combines on-the-job training with formal education and certification, as required for the role, designed to build skills and prepare incumbents for permanent employment opportunities.

The duties below represent the scope of responsibilities for the permanent Chef role that the incumbent will be trained to perform within the 3‑year period.

What You’ll Do
The Chef Apprentice will receive training and mentorship in order to become fully qualified to assist with the culinary services provided to LSS staff and third‑party members.

The position is responsible for helping plan the menu planning, food preparation, and kitchen clean‑up.

Major Responsibilities

Assist to plan, prepare and serve three (3) daily meals (buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner) in accordance with approved cycle menu, in sufficient quantities and quality

Help develop menus that reflect site preferences and prepare dishes for those with food allergies or other dietary restrictions/preferences





Prepare baked goods and desserts from scratch

Provide service to various sites, requiring travel

Ensure safe and sanitary work environment; kitchen and dining room sanitization duties executing safe food storage and labeling of potential food allergy items

Menu /meal planning based on master schedule

Education

High School diploma (or equivalent)

Certificates & Licenses

Beneficiary status under the Nunavut, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit land claim groups (required)

Knowledge

Strong organizational, communications, computer, problem solving skills

Adaptability and ability to manage multiple priorities and work cross‑culturally

Ability to speak Inuktitut (asset)

Previous experience in NWS and add previous remote / camp / fly‑in fly‑out experience is an asset

Safe food handling an asset

Experience in food industry an asset

Skills & Abilities

Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and work under physically demanding, often adverse weather conditions in remote Arctic locations

ROTATION & OVERTIME: 6 weeks in/6 weeks out rotation (48‑hour workweeks) with overtime at 1.5x your base rate. Paid travel days (up to 2 days) with all travel costs covered.
