Cook – Vancouver Hospice
Reporting to: Manager, Support Services
Job status: Permanent 0.6 FTE (45 hours bi‑weekly)
Compensation: $29.63/hour (aligned with Grid Level 19 of HEABC Facilities Wage Schedule)
Overview
This role supports the Vancouver Hospice by creating and serving safe, nutritious meals that uphold the organization’s values of compassion, collaboration, and care, while providing an open and welcoming environment for children, families, staff, and volunteers.
Responsibilities
Plan, prepare, and serve hot meals for 15‑50 people.
Maintain a warm and inviting presence and be available to interact with families, colleagues, and volunteers.
Follow daily menu plans and adapt to changes in servings or dietary needs.
Defrost, cook, and prepare foods (soups, sauces, salads, fish, poultry, meats, desserts, cookies) and prepare items for freezing.
Ensure all food is prepared according to Food Safe and preparation guidelines.
Check supplies, restock the kitchen, and maintain rotation of foods in storage to minimize spoilage and waste.
Assign tasks and provide direction to kitchen volunteers, supervising and engaging them during shifts.
Assist staff, volunteers, and parents with the planning of recreational activities such as baking to involve children and families.
Contribute to menu planning, food presentation, and recipe development in consultation with the Food Services Supervisor or Support Services Assistant Manager.
Follow the cleaning schedule and maintain cleanliness of counters, sinks, stove, floors, machines, equipment, storage areas, walls, splash area, and garbage removal.
Liaise with families, volunteers, and staff to discuss special dietary requirements and allergy alerts.
Ensure safety practices and food hygiene are adhered to at all times.
Attend Interdisciplinary Rounds as requested.
Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Completion of qualification as a cook from a recognized cooking school.
A minimum of one year of related experience in food preparation and cooking.
Food Safe Level 1 certification.
Preferred: Experience in a health care facility.
Acceptance of any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Qualifications
Knowledge of commonly used kitchen equipment, its use and maintenance.
Knowledge of cooking procedures and food safe techniques.
Effective verbal and written English communication skills.
Ability to interact positively with individuals at all levels and with varying backgrounds.
Ability to plan and organize work.
Ability to work with children and families in sensitive situations.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team member.
Ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
Demonstrated ability to plan and prepare a variety of nutritious food items that appeal to all ages.
Food Safe Level 1 certification.
WHMIS certification.
