Position Overview Under the leadership and direction of the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Psychiatric Nurse as team leaders, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides support and assistance to residents/patients in activities of daily living (ADLs) as identified in the care plan. The HCA works within the full scope of practice and engages in education and certifications to maintain competency. Person‑centered care is provided according to established standards, including Accreditation Canada Standards, Personal Care Home Standards, and legislative requirements. The incumbent exercises appropriate initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods, and action to be taken on unusual matters, functioning consistently with the mission, vision, and values of Southern Health‑Santé Sud.
Experience 1–2 years’ experience working in a health care setting (preferred)
1–2 years’ experience caring for elderly or disabled clients (preferred)
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate) Minimum Grade 12
Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized program




Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
Certification / Licensure / Registration Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Acute Care)
Qualifications and Skills Knowledge of confidentiality and privacy requirements under PHIA and FIPPA legislation
Knowledge of workplace safety requirements under WHMIS
Knowledge of Violence Prevention Program (VPP) training and processes
Knowledge of SCHIPP training and processes
Ability to organize and prioritize workload
Team‑work and ability to seek assistance as needed
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
Ability to interact well with others
Capacity to work in stressful environments, including with aggressive or agitated individuals
Respect for and promotion of a culturally diverse population
Proficiency in both official languages for target and designated bilingual positions
Respect for confidentiality in paper, electronic and other formats
Valuable work and attendance record
Some program areas require a valid Class 5 driver’s licence, an all‑purpose insured vehicle and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000
Physical Requirements Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job




No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions
May work evenings, nights and weekends
Required to travel to other regional facilities as duties may require
This term position may end earlier as outlined in the collective agreement.
