Registered Orthopaedic Technologist – Fracture Clinic
Employment Status: Temporary Part Time

Hours of Work: 8 hour shifts on weekdays and/or some weekends - subject to change as per Article 3 – Management Rights

Location: Humber River Health, Wilson Site

Reporting Relationship: Manager, Fracture, Plastics & Surgical Clinics, Vascular Access Team

Hourly Rate: $35.35 – $44.95

Position Responsibilities

Performing interventions focused on splint/cast and dressings/bandages application; windowing/wedging casts; trimming, bi-valving casts, bandages and splints; removal/repair/re-enforce casts; removal of sutures/wires/pins/external fixators; application of principles of surgical asepsis; preparing for minor surgical procedures; setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures; and adjusting and removing orthopaedic devices.

Assisting physicians on inpatient units and the plastics clinic with orthopaedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures and fracture reductions.

Participating in a comprehensive assessment of patients’ conditions, and developing an orthopaedic care plan in collaboration with the family and the interdisciplinary health care team.

Assessing, re-evaluating and revising the orthopaedic plan based on patient condition.

Processing physician orders for diagnostics, results, etc.

Documenting care provided in the patient record.

Providing education related to orthopaedic treatments and discharge instructions/follow-up care to patients and families (e.g., cast care, brace and appliance application, wound care, osteoporosis, injections, crutch use).

Maintaining inventory of orthopaedic supplies and devices (adjusting quotas, requesting appropriate staff to order supplies, ensuring equipment and supplies are adequate and in safe working order, and reporting needs for repair and replacement).

Keeping work area, equipment and supplies hazard free and reporting any health and safety concerns appropriately and in a timely manner.

Ensuring self and others adhere to safety policies and practices related to medical devices, equipment and biohazardous materials.

Following hospital guidelines and standards for documentation including incident reporting.

Performing work assignments under the direction of an orthopaedic surgeon, working within scope of practice,



and following hospital policies.

Training/Coaching of Orthopaedic Technicians and students.

Maintaining CSOT registration and competence by attending in‑services, workshops, conferences, physicians’ rounds, etc.

Qualifications

Current registration with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT) as a Registered Member in good standing.

Graduate of a recognized Orthopaedic Technologist Programme sanctioned by the CSOT, apprenticeship programme, and sponsorship by an Orthopaedic Physician or Graduate from a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and/or related field.

Current BCLS.

Minimum 3 years of recent experience as Orthopaedic Technologist including but not limited to –

Knowledge/Understanding:

anatomical structures and relationships with one another;

description of orthopaedic conditions/ injuries;

casting including related orthopaedic technologies; theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual traction;

application of aseptic technique in dressing change, removal of sutures, staples, pins and external fixators, and

setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures.

Demonstrated abilities:

interpret simple fractures and dislocations on x‑ray film;

excellent customer service;

effective and efficient time management and organization skills;

effective interpersonal and communication skills;

work independently and within a team setting.

Energetic, highly motivated, detail oriented individual with strong work ethic and the abilities for quick cast or appliance application.

Demonstrated commitment to life‑long learning and evidence‑based practice.

Plastics Clinic, Fracture Clinic and/or hospital experience preferred.

Nursing/Medical background an asset.

Excellent attendance and discipline free record required.
