ROLE OVERVIEW
The Clinical Extern position is an exciting opportunity for nursing students. Clinical Externs work as unregulated health care providers under the supervision of regulated health care professionals and are supported by a dedicated Clinical Extern Mentor Coordinator.
Through a patient and family-centered approach, they provide direct and indirect patient care and clinical unit support while simultaneously gaining knowledge, skill, and exposure to a hospital environment. Clinical Externs are valued members of the health care team and work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to achieve our organizational goal of providing “exceptional care, every time, for every person.”
Our Clinical Extern program offers adaptable, self-scheduled 8 hour (day/evening/night/weekend) shifts to accommodate the busy nature of academic schedules. Clinical Externs must be available to work a minimum of one shift (8 hours) every 2 weeks to meet program expectations.
Clinical Externs are hired for a 4-month term, which is subject to renewal based on the Clinical Externs meeting the program expectations and the organization’s continued need for Clinical Extern roles. Once Clinical Externs obtain their professional licence, they are no longer eligible to be part of the Enhanced Extern Program.
