Course number and title: INI101H1S: Writing, Advocacy, and Social Media
Course description: This course is an introduction to the concept of the city as a creative environment promoting not only growth and wealth but also social justice, equality, cooperation, and civility. Students will learn to build their own writing practice to help them to observe, interpret, and reflect upon the process of urban interaction and the relationship between creativity and justice. Restricted to first-year students.
*Please note, the delivery method for this course is currently in-person. Please note that, inkeeping with current circumstances, the course delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or the College.
Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2027 to April 30, 2027

MA in journalism, urban studies, writing, media studies, or related field, or relevant professional experience
Skilled experience as a writer, journalist, editor, critic, or public communicator, with an emphasis on cities, civic life, advocacy, or social media
At least 3 years of experience teaching writing, journalism, media, urban studies, or a related field
Preferred qualifications:
Publication record in journalism, nonfiction, criticism, or urban writing
Demonstrated interest in pedagogy




Familiarity with the range of writing ability of undergraduates
Familiarity with Toronto’s civic, cultural, and media landscape
Description of duties: The Sessional Lecturer will teach the full course, conduct all grading,and prepare and submit all final marks. In addition, the Sessional Lecturer will hold office hours each week, and answer student questions by email and/or appointment. A past instructor’s syllabus and detailed course outline will be provided to the Sessional Lecturer.
