Position Purpose Summary The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.
Accountabilities Food Preparation – Prepare breakfast, lunch and other meals, create grocery lists, and assist with food‑related donation pick‑ups. Follow food‑safe practices, manage cooking methods, record temperatures, label and date stored items, and minimize waste.
Health & Safety – Maintain cleanliness of kitchen equipment, conduct daily temperature audits, report issues to the Community Ministries Supervisor, and meet hygiene standards. Wear uniforms and hair precautions as required.
Communication – Coordinate with staff and volunteers on food service and safety, treat guests and staff with respect, and provide supervision and advice to recent workers.
Perform other position‑related duties as required.
Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility Reports directly to the Community Ministries Supervisor, provides training, mentoring and orientation to new staff, volunteers and students, and works independently as part of a team.
Financial and Materials Management Responsible for proper storage and use of food and equipment, and may authorize or collect small amounts of cash on a relief basis.
Working Conditions Work is performed in a kitchen, dining and storage environment with potential for hot, steamy, noisy, and physically demanding tasks. Safety measures include universal precautions, food‑safe practices, and required training.
Qualifications Education and Experience Completion of a formal post‑secondary/college program of one academic year.
Red Seal Certification (food services) required.
Food Safe Level 1 required; Level 2 considered an asset.
Occupational First Aid Level 1, WHMIS, Universal Precautions, and online health and safety courses.
Minimum of one year of experience cooking in an industrial kitchen.
Skills and Capabilities Willingness to adhere to the Mission, Vision, and Values of The Salvation Army.
Fluent in spoken and written English.
Excellent team and interpersonal skills.
Valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
Ability to lift or carry up to 30 pounds and stand for extended periods.
A strong orientation to safety, hygiene, and food‑cleaning protocols.
Compensation Target hiring range: $20.09 to $25.11 per hour, with a maximum of $30.13 per hour, based on market conditions, internal equity and candidate experience.
