First Nation Support Worker / Language & Cultural Worker (Contract)

Hours: 26 hours per week
Wage: $35.84 per hour
Reports To: School Principal and First Nations District Principal
Position Summary
The First Nation Support Worker / Language & Cultural Worker plays an key role in supporting the academic, cultural, and personal success of students at Fort Rupert Elementary School. Working collaboratively with teachers and school staff, the successful candidate will promote and strengthen students’ understanding of Kwakwaka’wakw history, language, culture, traditions, and contemporary issues while providing classroom and individual student support.
This position requires the ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and build positive relationships with students, families, Elders, and community members.
Key Responsibilities
Promote understanding and appreciation of Kwakwaka’wakw history, culture, traditions, and contemporary issues.
Encourage and promote the use of basic Kwakwala throughout the school.
Develop, prepare, and present culturally appropriate learning materials in collaboration with classroom teachers.
Coordinate cultural presentations and learning opportunities with Elders, artists, knowledge keepers, and other community resource people.
Support the educational program for all students.
Assist students individually and in small groups with classroom learning.
Monitor student progress and provide ongoing support.
Assist students transitioning from Fort Rupert Elementary School to secondary school.
Maintain accurate student records, including First Nations Program data collection.
Participate in First Nations Program initiatives, including the Indigenous Education Enhancement Agreement.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Secondary school graduation (Dogwood Certificate or equivalent).
Minimum one year of post-secondary education in a related field such as First Nations Studies, Anthropology, English, Mathematics, Sociology, Psychology, Education, or a related discipline.
Extensive knowledge of Kwakwaka’wakw culture, traditions, and language.
Ability to support students in mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
Proficiency with basic computer applications, including word processing and record keeping.
Two to three years of recent experience working with First Nations students is preferred.
Additional Requirements
Successful completion of a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
This position is subject to a three-month probationary period.
