JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Dean of Arts and General Education, to assist faculty in the preparation and presentation of student work and to supervise students working in the Visual arts department’s ceramics Studios.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure the maintenance and safe operation of all machinery, tools and equipment in the ceramics studios

Implement and maintain health and safety procedures in the ceramics studios

Provide technical support to students and faculty, including set-up and operation of tools and equipment in the ceramics studios

Assist teachers with preparation of course materials, including maintaining a continuous supply of raw clay, slips, and glazes

Assist teachers with technical and creative problem solving

Supervise and assist students with class projects and guide them in the proper handling of materials, methods, and techniques

Schedule and supervise open studio sessions in ceramics as needed

Provide demonstrations on safe and proper use of tools and equipment as needed

Load, fire, and unload gas and electric kilns on a regular basis

Troubleshoot digital and analog kiln controllers, spray booth, slab-roller and pugmill maintenance.

Oversee the purchase, acquisition, and storage of course materials in ceramics

Assist with distribution of course materials

Maintain inventory of studio equipment and materials, and order as required

Attend departmental assembly meetings as needed

Supervise student employees as needed

Assist with set-up and take down of the annual Graduation Exhibition

Undertake clay, slip, glaze, and firing research and development as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education




College diploma in an appropriate specialty (Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Ceramics, Design) or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

Specific Requirements:

Prior working experience in a teaching/learning setting preferred

Knowledge of earthenware, stoneware, slips, glazes, gas reduction firing and electric kilns

Knowledge of handbuilding and throwing techniques

Experience in a visual arts teaching/learning environment preferred

Experience in a ceramics teaching/learning environment preferred

Strong interpersonal skills

Autonomous - able to work with minimal supervision

Ability to lift bags of up to 50lbs

Intermediate English, oral, written comprehension and written

Basic French, oral

Testing may be required to demonstrate knowledge of:

ü Operation and maintenance of equipment and tools associated with the duties mentioned above
