About Delta1:
Delta1 Communications Centre provides Public Safety Answering Point, Fire Service Communications, as well as other emergency services and enforcement dispatch for more than 24 communities across the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Northern British Columbia. Our technology and services are tailored to serve the needs of fire, rescue, enforcement and industry personnel across the North.
Summary:
Dispatchers are available onsite 24/7/365 to answer calls and ensure a response to emergency incidents. Other tasks include taking reports from the public, transcribing the details, and transmitting that information to the appropriate personnel or department(s). The Delta1 team also provides safety monitoring services for field staff, ensuring compliance with safe workplace regulations and lone-worker legislation.

Responsibilities

Handling emergency calls from the public, questioning callers for location and incident details

Dispatching for fire & rescue crews, Enforcement Officers and others

Judgement-based decisions regarding responses and additional resources

Accurate recall of callsigns, locations, status details, action requests and readbacks

Communications by radio, phone, text, email and satellite with data entry of all activity

Routinely balancing multiple simultaneous communications in order of priority

Adherence to detailed National Fire Protection Association regulations for dispatching and standard operating procedures

Field staff safety supervision and tracking, missed check-in follow-up, response deployment

Transcribing non-emergency reports from the public, preparing reports for transmission

Equipment and software testing, failure reporting, basic troubleshooting as required

Training simulation support for emergency partners and client agencies

Down Time:
During quiet periods, dispatchers are permitted to read, study, or engage in other reasonable activities as long as they do not distract from or take priority over work tasks.

This posting is for on-call work which includes advance planned shifts to cover for full-time staff vacation, illness, or other leave.

Probationary Period:
Employment in this role is subject to a probationary period of 12 months.

Emergency Dispatcher Requirements
This job is not for everyone. It can be demanding and stressful at times. It is also very rewarding and occasionally fun. The work itself is serious, but the environment, management and co-workers are welcoming and relaxed. On-the-job training and ongoing support are provided.

Skills

Local knowledge of the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Northern British Columbia

Superior verbal and written communication skills are essential

Ability to make quick decisions under pressure and manage high-stress situations effectively

Familiarity with phonetic alphabet, 24-hr clock, radio systems, and mapping tools are considered an asset

Proficient with keyboard typing at a preferred speed of 40 words-per-minute with 90% accuracy

Fluency in English (essential)

Previous dispatch, emergency services, or customer service experience strongly preferred

Experience:
One (1) year of dispatching, emergency services, or customer service preferred.

Willing to 'hire the attitude and train the skills'. So if you feel you're missing some of the desired qualifications, but are a diligent skilled with strong communication skills, and a positive attitude.

Transportation:
Public transit is not available to the work location at the present time. Candidates must be able to commute in own vehicle for at least the next 4-5 months. Approximately 25 minute commute from downtown Whitehorse. Mileage compensation provided while the work location is outside city limits.
