Position Summary
As an Early Childhood Assistant at the Child Development Institute (CDI) Wellesley Early Learning Centre, you will support the Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in implementing the children’s program for the age group you work with. This 25‑hour weekly, 18‑month floating contract is a daytime, on‑site role with shifts that may vary from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Monday‑Friday).
Responsibilities
Supervise children in a safe and healthy environment.
Update attendance throughout the day.
Conduct consistent headcount during all indoor and outdoor transitions of children.
Assist the RECE in preparing and setting up program activities.
Record brief observations notes on individual child behavior and responses to aid in tracking developmental needs.
Extend a warm welcome to families at all times and maintain positive, qualified relationships with parents, families, peers and visitors.
Assist in establishing daily routines and schedules, ensuring consistency with the ELC Behaviour Guidance Policy.
Discuss observation notes with the team teacher for inclusion in program plans and children’s learning experiences.
Support day‑to‑day classroom functions in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), Toronto Children’s Service – Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI), and Toronto Public Health (TPH).
Maintain room organization; help older children with cleanup responsibilities and assist placement students with labeling and organizing.
Maintain records, copies of program plans, daily care information, and other documentation as required by the ELC director and legislated standards.
Assist with opening and closing of the centre while an RECE is on staff.
Participate regularly in supervision as required by agency policy.
Pursue professional development through training sessions and literature.
Perform housekeeping duties as assigned by the ELC Director.
Report any signs of child abuse to the Children Aid Society.
Inform the ELC Director and team members promptly of children’s illnesses, injuries (with correct documentation), and absenteeism.
Complete any other duties as assigned.
Shift and Room Assignments
Shift and room assignments are assigned according to centre needs and may change. Must be willing to work with all age groups and be flexible to accommodate operational needs such as supporting lunch service, cleaning tables, setting up cots for nap time, assisting with wake‑up routine, relieving and covering breaks, and supporting the escorting of children up and down stairs where applicable.
What You Bring
Early Childhood Assistant certificate, equivalent experience, or current enrolment in an ECE program.
Valid Standard First Aid Certificate.

Strong customer‑service capability; experience developing and maintaining positive relations with parents, families, peers, and guests.
Dedicated and flexible team player able to interact with team members and colleagues at all levels of the agency.
Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with groups from diverse backgrounds and experiences, including socio‑economic status.
May require flexible hours.

Physical Effort
Regular to frequent lifting of children up to 45 lbs., including bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, pushing, pulling, sitting, walking, and climbing stairs.
Noise level can be moderate to loud.
Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting students.
Working Conditions
Governed by concurrent and dynamic deadlines, despite conflicting priorities and frequent interruptions.
Fast‑paced environment.
Interaction with students, teachers, administration, family members, visitors, and government agencies/personnel under all circumstances.

Compensation
This is a unionised position under CUPE paying $34,961 per annum, pro‑rated based on contract length.
