Child Development Institute (CDI) is a multi‑service organization dedicated to supporting children, youth and families. CDI delivers evidence‑based mental health and early learning programs across the Toronto area and has over 100 years of experience in community outreach and family support.

Position Summary
The Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) works under the guidance of a Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) and the ELC Director. The ECA assists in implementing the children’s program for age‑specific groups, ensures compliance with the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) and other regulatory frameworks, and contributes to a protected, nurturing learning environment.

Responsibilities

Supervise children in a safe and healthy environment.

Maintain accurate attendance and headcount records.

Assist the RECE in program preparation, activity setup, and brief observational notes.

Welcome families, building positive and professional relationships.

Support daily routines, schedule adherence, and behavior guidance per the ELC Behaviour Guidance Policy.

Collaborate with team teachers to review observations and integrate them into program plans.

Maintain classroom organization, including cleaning, labeling, and management of materials.

Record and report child health information, illnesses, injuries, and absenteeism.

Assist with opening and closing duties; participate in regular supervision.

Pursue professional development and training opportunities.

Provide housekeeping duties as instructed by the ELC Director.

Report any signs of child abuse to the Children Aid Society.

Perform any other duties assigned by the ELC Director.

Qualifications

Early Childhood Assistant certificate or equivalent experience; currently enrolled in an ECE program accepted.

Valid Standard First Aid Certificate.

Physical Effort

Regular lifting of children up to 45 lbs.; bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, pushing, pulling, walking, and climbing stairs.

Noise levels moderate to loud; intermittent walking and standing.

Working Conditions

Fast‑paced environment with dynamic deadlines and frequent interruptions.

Interactions with students, teachers, administration, family members, visitors, and government agencies.

Other Requirements

Offers contingent upon successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check.

Credential verification and reference checks required.

Compensation
This is a unionised position under CUPE, paid $34,961 per annum and prorated based on the contract duration.
