Senior Accountant — Remote, Year-End and Tax-Focused Position
Xponents CPA Professional Corporation is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our growing accounting and tax practice. The primary focus of this position is completing corporate year-end engagements accurately, efficiently, and with minimal supervision.
This role is best suited for someone pursuing or completing the CPA designation who wants to strengthen their Canadian corporate accounting and tax knowledge. Xponents is not a high-volume T1 practice. Candidates should know how to prepare personal tax returns, but the role will focus primarily on corporate year-end work, T2 returns, T3 trust returns, T5013 partnership information returns, bookkeeping review, and tax matters affecting privately held businesses.
Work Arrangement
This is a home-based position with no regular office attendance. The successful candidate may be required to travel to clients’ offices approximately once or twice per month.
The candidate must maintain an appropriate home-office setup, including:
- A reliable laptop that meets the firm’s security requirements and can connect securely to the firm’s remote server.
- A large external monitor suitable for accounting and tax work.
- A stable, high-speed internet connection.
- A private workspace where confidential client information can be handled securely.
- Availability to attend clients’ offices when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage corporate year-end engagements from receiving client records through completion and submission for partner review.
- Prepare complete year-end working-paper files using CaseWare.
- Prepare compilation financial statements and related schedules using CaseView.
- Review bookkeeping records and identify errors, missing information, unusual transactions, and required adjusting entries.
- Complete bank, credit card, loan, payroll, GST/HST, shareholder loan, and intercompany reconciliations.
- Prepare adjusting journal entries, lead sheets, continuity schedules, and supporting working papers.
- Prepare T2 corporate income tax returns and related tax schedules.
- Prepare GST/HST returns and other government filings.
- Prepare straightforward T1 personal income tax returns when required.
- Identify accounting and tax issues requiring further review by a manager or partner.
- Communicate directly with clients to request documents, resolve questions, and move engagements toward completion.
- Clear review notes promptly and update working papers based on feedback.
- Assist with reviewing bookkeeping or year-end work completed by junior team members when required.
- Manage multiple engagements, prioritize competing deadlines, and take ownership of assigned files.
- Attend clients’ offices approximately once or twice per month when in office work is required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a closely related field.
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience working at a Canadian CPA firm.
- Strong experience completing corporate year-end files using CaseWare.
- Practical working knowledge of CaseView and QuickBooks Online.
- Experience preparing Canadian T2 corporate income tax returns.
- Working knowledge of Canadian T1 personal income tax returns, although T1 work is not the main focus of this position.
- Ability to communicate professionally in both Mandarin and English.
- Good understanding of Canadian accounting, corporate tax, GST/HST, and compilation engagement requirements.
- Strong reconciliation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to identify issues rather than simply process the information provided.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing complete, review-ready files.
- Ability to work independently and remain accountable in a remote workplace.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and meet firm deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to accept feedback, clear review notes,
and continuously improve work quality.
- Interest in advancing Canadian tax knowledge and pursuing a long-term career as a CPA.
- Ability to travel to clients’ offices approximately once or twice per month.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA designation or active progress toward completing the CPA program.
- Experience reviewing bookkeeping or working papers prepared by junior staff.
- Experience working with owner-managed businesses and private corporations.
- Familiarity with TaxCycle or similar Canadian tax preparation software.
