NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK
Under the direction of the Program & Services Manager, Aquatics Manager, or designate, Recreation Attendants interact with recreation and aquatic users and assist with programs, activities, lessons, and special events to provide a fun and safe experience. These positions require consistent enforcement of program rules, response to situations requiring staff intervention, and documentation of incidents and accidents. Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Programmer, Supervisor, or designate, depending on operational requirements. At times, they may work independently with limited supervision, requiring self-motivation.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Interact with recreation or aquatic users and provide routine assistance.
Works independently or with limited supervision to monitor activities in recreation or aquatic areas to prevent public accidents or injuries.
Assist with maintaining clean and orderly facilities to ensure the safety of staff and patrons.
Support patrons in activities such as skating, sports, fitness, or swimming.
Assist with implementation of community programs, activities, lessons, or events, under supervision.
Apply relevant regulations, policies, and procedures as directed.
Report all accidents or injuries immediately to the designated supervisor and activate emergency procedures as required.
Detect and report hazardous conditions, practices, and behaviours in the workplace.
Promote positive relations with participants, media, and external organizations.
Contribute to a respectful and positive work environment in accordance with City policy.
Participate in peer mentorship and support during onboarding and ongoing operations, including shadow shifts for recent staff; experienced attendants may be asked to model tasks, provide guidance, and share practical knowledge on responsibilities such as water slide operations and inflatable setup/cleanup, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves,



and the health and safety of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Properly wears protective clothing, devices, and equipment provided, and ensures hazards are immediately reported to supervisors.
Comply with the City of Fort St. John’s Occupational Health and Safety program and all applicable policies and procedures.
Perform related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required. Perform additional duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILL
Minimum 15 years of age and enrolled in Grade 10 or higher level of education.
Valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C.
Recreation Attendant – Recreation Department: Must be a proficient and confident skater. Candidates must provide their own helmet and ice skates and be able to pass a skating test.
Recreation Attendant – Aquatics Department: Must be a proficient and confident swimmer, demonstrated through valid lifeguard or water safety certifications. Candidates must be able to pass a swimming test.
Ability to pass and maintain Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector screening.
Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of age groups, from preschoolers to seniors.
Proven ability to lead and engage individuals – particularly children – in a confident, safe, and respectful manner.
Ability to maintain good working relationships with other City personnel and the public.
Comfortable working independently or without direct supervision.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Additional lifeguard and/or water safety certifications are considered an asset.
Skating, fitness, sport, or coaching certifications are considered an asset.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Computers, printers, photocopiers, telephone, email and other office and electronic equipment.



Activity-related equipment such as inflatables, sport, fitness, aquatics, and exercise equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position entails skating, swimming, playing sports, jogging, walking, standing, and lifting or moving items that can weigh up to 50 lbs.
GENERAL
Formal application, evaluation of education and experience, oral interview, reference check, Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector screening, and other job-related tests may be required.
