The Lax Kw’alaams Recreation Centre has an exciting and immediate opening for a Casual Lifeguard. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing vigilant pool supervision to ensure a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for all patrons. You will respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, administer first aid when required, and uphold all aquatic safety standards and facility policies.
Responsibilities General
Perform lifeguarding and instructional duties by monitoring pool safety practices and ensuring compliance with Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Service, and Public Health Act standards
Identify and communicate equipment, facility, and program needs to the Supervisor, and report maintenance concerns promptly
Assist with routine facility maintenance and annual maintenance shutdowns, including cleaning, scrubbing, polishing, hosing, and inspecting the pool, equipment, and surrounding areas to ensure a secure and clean environment
Respond to emergencies by providing first aid, water rescues, and other emergency services in accordance with established procedures
Assist with the planning, promotion, and delivery of special events and recreation programs, including preparing promotional materials, responding to program inquiries, and supporting participant registration
Follow all occupational health and safety policies and procedures by working safely, using appropriate protective measures, identifying and correcting or reporting hazards, and encouraging safe work practices among coworkers
Participate in required training and seek additional instruction when assigned unfamiliar tasks or responsibilities
Perform other tasks within the scope of the position
QUALIFICATIONS Education High School Diploma
Post-Secondary Education (Asset)
Lifesaving NLS Pool Option; Aquatic Emergency Care of Standard 1st Aid (Asset or willing to be trained)
First Aid and CPR Certificate; AED Responder (Asset or willing to be trained)
Red Cross Water Safety Instructor; BCRPA Aquafit Instruction; Lifesaving Instructor; First Aid Instructor
(Asset or willing to be trained)
Or willing to take any required training/courses
Experience Any experience as a lifeguard or related role (Asset)
Competency Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to resolve conflict effectively with both staff and guests
Strong work ethics
Strong swimming and surveillance skills
Ability to remain alert and act quickly in emergencies
Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to a changing work environment
Ability to work individually and as part of a team
Physical Demands and Working Environment Physical Demand
Requires standing for long periods of time and performing physical rescues
Exposure to chlorine, and occasional work in hot or humid conditions
Must be able to lift or move equipment and assist swimmers as needed
Requires training to acquire or renew lifeguard certification
Mental Demands
You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time
Ability to assess situations rapidly and determine the appropriate course of action during emergencies, often under pressure.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (not required, asset)
Classification/Pay Scale $22.72
As per the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Local 2365 Collective Agreement
Preference will be given to Lax Kw’alaams Band Members or qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry.
