POSITION SUMMARY

The Learning Alternatives Program at the John Howard Society of Durham Region, funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, supports individuals in developing non-accredited academic and essential skills aligned with the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF), including reading, writing, numeracy, digital literacy, and employability skills.

The Adult Learning Instructor delivers instruction, assessment, and individualized learning supports to help learners progress toward goals such as sustainable employment, further education or training, and increased independence. Working within an adult education framework, the instructor supports learners at OALCF levels 1–3 and applies strong instructional expertise in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills to facilitate meaningful skill development.

This role is community-based and delivered through flexible in-person, virtual, hybrid, and itinerant models across North Durham. Service delivery takes place in community partner locations and outreach settings, requiring responsiveness to rural realities and barriers such as transportation challenges, digital access limitations, housing and income instability, and social isolation. The instructor must be adaptable in tailoring service delivery to meet diverse learner needs across geographically dispersed communities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Service User Assessment and Support

- Conduct initial, ongoing, and exit educational assessments using a variety of tools to determine learner skills, interests, abilities, and goals.
- Develop individualized learning plans aligned with OALCF levels, learner goals, and employment, training, or education pathways.
- Demonstrate digital technology skills, reading, writing, and math proficiencies sufficient to develop curriculum and instruct adult learners within OALCF levels 1, 2, and 3.
- Facilitate 1:1 and group instruction using in-person, virtual, hybrid, and itinerant delivery models across North Durham.
- Deliver services in community partner and outreach locations, adapting to rural and geographically dispersed communities.
- Adapt instructional approaches, scheduling, and service delivery methods to meet the unique needs of rural and geographically dispersed communities.
- Select and adapt learning materials aligned with learner goals, OALCF principles, and community/labour market context.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by evaluating learner needs and outcomes, identifying community gaps, and then participate in developing and implementing program improvements.




- Communicate effectively with learners and colleagues both verbally and in writing.
- Show leadership and effectively problem solve and critically think.
- Provide timely follow-up support and coaching to assist learners in achieving goals.
- Take initiative and work collaboratively as part of the Employment and Training Services team.
- Provide day-to-day orientation and guidance to placement students and volunteers.
- Meet quarterly and annual performance targets as established by funders and the agency.
- Efficiently manage a diverse and at times high-volume client caseload.
- Support learners to achieving measurable progress toward funder established goal paths

Case Management/Documentation

- Foster a positive learning environment for service users of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
- Maintain accurate case notes, learner plans, progress reports, and service user files in accordance with program standards.
- Ensure timely and accurate data entry and reporting using required systems and tools (e.g., Excel, CaMS).

- Provide relevant instruction based on the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF) levels 1–3.

- Able to work in an environment that requires the ability to collect and gather statistical information, meet deadlines, and achieve targets.

- Proficient in collection and data entry into spreadsheets (Excel) and online portals (CaMS).

- Maintain and complete monthly performance-related statistical reports as required.

Community, Administration & Other

- Work collaboratively with community partners, host sites, the Get Set community, and the Employment Service Network to support coordinated, accessible, and community-responsive service delivery throughout North Durham.

- Contribute to program marketing and outreach activities and promote JHS training programs throughout the community.

- Represent the agency in the community when required.

- Facilitate and attend workshops, meetings, seminars, and community partner activities as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education & Certifications:

- Completed post secondary education in Education, Social Services or related field

Experience:

- Teaching/tutoring experience and demonstrated understanding and application of the principles of adult education.
- Facilitation, instruction, employment counselling, motivational interviewing, , and client centered individual support and guidance experience.
- Experience delivering outreach, community-based, itinerant, or hybrid programming is considered an asset.
- Experience working within rural or geographically dispersed communities is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Demonstrated digital technology skills, reading, writing, and math proficiencies sufficient to develop curriculum and instruct adult learners within OALCF levels 1, 2,



and 3.
- Sound understanding of Skills for Success and the OALCF framework, including goal paths, competencies, tasks, and levels of performance.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Solid understanding of group dynamics and ability to motivate others.
- A strong understanding of adult learners’ needs and circumstances.
- Extensive knowledge of labour market training opportunities and labour market information and resources.
- Proven experience working with diverse learner populations, including youth, newcomers, internationally trained professionals, OW, EI and ODSP recipients, individuals experiencing long-term unemployment, and persons with disabilities.
- Strong case management and assessment skills.
- Able to take initiative and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
- Knowledge of services related to adult literacy.
- Understanding and knowledge of learning styles.
- Familiar with learning disabilities and their impact on learning.
- Robust computer skills in a Windows environment using Office 365 applications, as well as knowledge of computerized learning software applications.
- Experienced in using Zoom to host/co-host meetings, including using polls, breakout rooms, and annotation mode.
- Familiarity with social media and digital communication platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Wordpress).
- Excellent written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently within community-based and partner locations while maintaining strong communication with the broader team.
- Demonstrated adaptability, flexibility, and problem-solving skills within evolving community-based service environments.
- Understanding of barriers impacting rural populations, including transportation access, digital literacy, poverty, housing insecurity, and social isolation.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with community partners and host organizations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

- These positions will be based from community locations located in the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, TRAVEL IS REQUIRED
- May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
- Interacts with clients, visitors, and staff from other organizations.
- Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, and lifting.
- Manual dexterity required to use computers and peripherals, kitchen appliances, etc.
- Frequent local travel throughout North Durham and surrounding communities is required.
- Service delivery may occur at multiple community partner locations, outreach sites, and virtual platforms.
- From time to time, you may be required to work from the Oshawa site to provide coverage, support program needs, or participate in team-based activities and service coordination.
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to travel throughout North Durham and surrounding communities are required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Day hours Monday to Friday
Schedule to be determined based on needs of the community.
Thirty-five (35) hours per week.
