Job Overview

Home Base Yellowknife is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Recreation Program

Coordinator (RC) to develop, coordinate, and implement engaging recreation programs

for youth accessing any of the programs and services offered by Home Base Yellowknife.

The RC supports youth ages 12–24 by creating opportunities to participate in a wide

variety of recreational, cultural, educational, and wellness activities throughout

Yellowknife.

The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for working with youth and an

interest in a broad range of sports, recreational pursuits, and both indoor and outdoor

activities including arts, crafts and traditional activities. They will be creative, energetic,

and adaptable, with the ability to plan and facilitate programs that encourage youth

participation, build positive relationships, and promote healthy lifestyles.

Working closely with the Youth Centre Manager and other program managers, the RC

will network and collaborate with community partners to coordinate inclusive,

meaningful, and engaging programming that reflects the diverse interests and needs of

youth in our community.

Flexible 8hr work days, Monday - Friday, with Evening and Weekend availability, to

accommodate programming schedule.

Duties

● Uphold Youth Recreation Program core values of: Fun, Safety, Teamwork,

Confidence, Education, Honesty, Integrity, and Respect for others

● Work with Home Base Program Managers, and other front line employees to create

and schedule daily recreational programming for youth daily

● Responsible for the care, safety, cleanliness, and organization of all equipment used for recreational programs.

● Provide assistance and support with Youth Centre Programming

● Initiate and maintain relationships with community partners (such as the City of

Yellowknife, sport clubs, local businesses, Indigenous community, etc.), for the

purpose of working together to offer recreational programming to youth

● Identify youth needs and interests, assess program responsiveness, and initiates new

programming elements, which may include partnerships with other

community-based organizations

● Re-planning duties for assigned programs and activities to include written

projections of costs and fees as related to balancing the program budget.

● Receive pre-approval from Supervisor for expenses,completion of expense claims,

analyze and report post-program budgetary outcomes

● Create recreation schedule one month in advance and post details for youth:

recreational activities include but are not limited to sports, attending a fitness

center, movie nights, camping trips, day trips, attending community events,

workshops, arts and crafts, cultural events, friendly competitions, and movie and/or

game nights at HomeBase





● Promote recreation programs by creating, producing, and distributing printed

materials, and updating Home Base YK social media

● Provide direct support to youth between the ages of 12 and 24 through

recreational activities

● Provide normalizing, individualized support while respecting and inspiring youth

to be engaged in the programs

● Identify community resources and services that are congruent with the youths

overall service and transition plans

● Through recreational activities, assist youth in overcoming dependencies, adjusting

to life, and making positive changes

● Assist youth to increase capacity for autonomy, independent decision-making and

problem solving

● Support youth to express feelings and talk about what is happening in their lives,

and help to improve insight into self-awareness and discovery

● Ensure the environment is a protected space for all that attend including 2SLGBTQIPA+

and Indigenous individuals

● Ensure cultural and spiritual beliefs of all youth are supported

● Any other duties as instructed by your Supervisor

Supervision

● Report to the Youth Centre Manager

● Participate in Monthly dual agency and Program Coordinator meetings

● Supervise youth attending in groups or individually as needed

● Provide supervision appropriate for youths’ developmental age

Crisis Management

● Employ ethical and protected behavior management techniques to encourage

awareness and an acceptable range of appropriate behavior

● Practice conflict resolution strategies with individuals and in group settings

● Identify safety risks and ensure the appropriate intervention is applied as needed

● Assess, evaluate and plan to prevent crisis situations whenever possible

Participation in Teamwork

● Actively support the Mission, Vision and Goals of Home Base Yellowknife

● Work collaboratively with other staff within the organization

● Actively participate in various HBYK team meetings, professional development

activities, and organization activities/events

Reporting

● Ensure necessary documents are signed before commencing work with youth

including confidentiality forms, release of information forms, and attendance etc.

● Submit statistics, assessments and reports regularly to Supervisor as required

● Ensure a safe filing system for confidential documents

Personal Skills, Knowledge, Experience

● Creative, innovative,



energetic and enthusiastic, as demonstrated by the ability to

energize and motivate youth to participate in activities

● Punctual and reliable

● Practiced social skills and emotional intelligence

● Effective communication skills necessary to confidently communicate with youth,

co-workers, supervisors, people in the community, qualified people, law

enforcement, government workers, court workers, education staff, etc.

● Experience working with youth who have mental health challenges, and youth who

are experiencing addictions to drugs and/or alcohol

● Experience working with youth, youth who are experiencing homelessness, youth

who are trauma experienced, and youth with disabilities

● A level of understanding of homelessness in Canada, homelessness interventions,

and factors contributing to homelessness

● A a level of understanding of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and

various forms of discrimination as they relate to youth

● A level of understanding of Northwest Territories history, including the impact of

colonization and residential schools

● Prioritize cultural safety and cultural humility

● Experience completing case notes, forms, and maintaining statistical data as

required

● Ability to collaborate well with others

● Ability to respond with empathy

● Confidence in crisis and emergency situations

● Organizational skills, ability to multitask

● Skills to manage conflicts between individuals and groups

● High level of adaptability

● Ability to provide guidance to coworkers regarding best practises

● Ability to concurrently lead or coordinate multiple and diverse projects

● Ability to build and utilize professional relationships to meet objectives

● Ability to learn from others and from training sources to improve programs and

services

Qualifications

● Minimum of 19 years of age (required)

● Fluent in English, written and spoken (required)

● Education such as a college or university degree in education, social work, youth

work, community work or equivalent work experience (asset)

● 1+ years previous Program Development/Management work experience

(coordinating programming / planning or running sports / recreation programs)

(required)

● Experience working in Google Suite(asset)

● Valid Driver’s license (required) , Minimum of 1 yrs fully licensed experience (required). Must pass Organization Driver’s Test to drive Organization vehicle and transport youth

● Approved Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (required)

● Approved Child Protection Record Check (required)

● Valid First Aid/CPR (asset)

Pay: $35.35 per hour
