Overview
Acting as a strategic HR Business Partner and people leader, this role brings energy, sound judgment, and practical innovation to a variety of complex people matters, including inter-provincial employment law, employee relations, workforce planning, and organizational change. The Manager, People and Culture will help design and deliver people solutions that are compliant, client-centred, and aligned with AKG Canada’s growth and values. Through strong relationships with regional managers and cross-functional leaders, this position provides coaching, guidance, and leadership support that enables managers to lead with confidence, strengthen employee engagement, and deliver high-quality services. The role also contributes to the ongoing development of a high-performing, values-driven People & Culture function by identifying opportunities to modernize processes, use data more effectively, and create consistent, people-focused practices across the organization. This role delivers value in employee and labour relations, policy administration, workforce planning, investigations, performance management, retention, leadership development, change management, and organizational culture initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and direction to members of the People & Culture team, fostering collaboration, accountability, continuous learning, and a solutions-focused mindset.
- Act as a trusted advisor to leaders on employee relations, performance management, policy interpretation, and documentation.
- Partner with Regional and other managers to help them diagnose and address people issues and/or risks.
- Lead and support people-focused projects that improve manager capability, employee experience, operational consistency, and organizational readiness for growth.
- Identify and engage appropriate HR and business resources to deliver effective solutions to those issues and risks.
- Provide advice on conflict resolution, monitor escalated workplace issues and complaints.
- Ensure all employee relations issues are handled professionally and in a timely manner.
- Create a system and/or program to track potential escalation issues and ensure People Managers are aware and monitoring the situation.
- Conduct Post-Mortems & Process Fixes: Perform root-cause analyses post-resolution, identifying systemic gaps and collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement long-term preventative controls.
- Working closely with the Regional/People Managers monitor complex employee matters, including leaves of absence, workplace investigations, accommodations, and disability management, including return-to-work plans.
- Stay current on multi-provincial employment legislation and ensure organizational compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Support and enhance the annual performance review process to drive employee development and organizational effectiveness.
- Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of People & Culture policies aligned with best practices and organizational goals.
- Support HRIS optimization, including data integrity, and workflow improvements.
- Champion cutting-edge HR practices, digital tools, and streamlined workflows that reduce administrative friction and create a more responsive, engaging, and accessible employee experience.
- Leverage workforce data and analytics to identify trends and inform decision-making.
- Work with the People & Culture Team to develop and deliver training and provide coaching to leaders to build people leadership capability.
- Model inclusive, values-based leadership and support managers in creating psychologically safe, high-performing teams where employees feel supported, engaged, and empowered to do meaningful work.
- Champion the learning opportunities provided by the AKG to enhance overall employee performance.
- Participate in, and support key committees, such as Health & Safety, etc.
- Make recommendations for the continuously improvement of HR processes, documentation, and workflows to enhance efficiency and the employee experience.
- Contribute to broader People & Culture initiatives and projects as needed.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive HR experience in a complex public or private sector organization with at least two years of direct supervisory experience.
- Successful completion of a university degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
- Demonstrated and applied knowledge of Canadian employment law & regulations (both federal & provincial including human rights, accommodation, whistleblowing, and workplace standards / requirements).
- Deep commitment to equity diversity and inclusion practices.
- Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR); Certified Human Resource Leader (CHRL) OR Certified Human Resource Executive (CHRE) or similar designation required.
- Experience in employment services, education, or social service is a plus.
- Ability to travel both locally and nationally may be required for on-site meetings, engagements, conferences and presentations.
